Good morning everyone,
I am currently planning to install Ikea PAX wardrobes in a room with a sloped ceiling. Since the standard wardrobes are designed for straight walls, my question is how to mount them as safely and securely as possible on sloped walls. Specifically, I mean:
- Are there proven fastening methods that reliably hold on angled walls?
- Should the PAX wardrobes be modified before installation, or are special Ikea extensions recommended?
- Which types of anchors or screws are advisable, especially if the sloped ceiling is covered with drywall rather than load-bearing wood?
- What should definitely be considered when leveling and anchoring to prevent the wardrobes from wobbling or developing pressure marks?
I look forward to your tips, experiences, or even illustrated descriptions of how you have handled similar situations. Thanks in advance for your replies!

I would like to know your exact dimensions and wall structure to give more specific advice.Thank you for the detailed reply! The sloped ceiling is covered with drywall, and behind it is a wooden rafter frame spaced about 40cm (16 inches) apart. I estimate the angle to be around 35 degrees. The floor is laminate.
So, I could try attaching the brackets to the rafters? Would a wooden batten as a support surface be recommended in addition, especially since the laminate floor does not provide a solid base for the cabinet itself?
The cabinet dimensions will be about 100cm (40 inches) wide and a maximum height of 220cm (87 inches). Overall, the load will be quite substantial, right?

I really like your approach of playing it safe by using a wooden batten as an additional support surface. I once had an issue with laminate flooring where a wardrobe tilted slightly inward because it didn’t have a solid base.
Your concerns about the load are justified. A 100cm (39 inch) wide Pax wardrobe can get quite heavy when fully loaded. So definitely make sure to fix it at multiple points – use as many rafters as possible.
Good luck! I would also suggest having a helper hold the cabinet in place while you attach the angled brackets.
Hello kinapu,
I would like to add that when installing PAX wardrobes on sloped ceilings, it is important to pay attention to the torsional behavior of the cabinet structure. Especially wardrobes that do not rest fully on the floor can show twisting under load, which affects stability.
I recommend reinforcing the cabinet base, for example with a suitable platform or a plinth that reduces stress on the floor.
It is also advisable to strongly reinforce the back panel, even though Ikea only uses simple fiberboard here. Additional reinforcements, possibly profiled wood, help to stabilize the construction, particularly with angled fittings.

I’m skeptical whether simple brackets are sufficient if the brackets are installed incorrectly or the screws are not properly seated. This is an important point! Especially with sloped ceilings, you shouldn’t rely on the bracket alone but must secure it firmly at several points.
I’ve had good results by combining two different methods: attaching brackets at the upper part of the sloped ceiling and additionally providing wooden battens below as support and for easier installation. This better distributes the load and prevents wobbling or tipping that can otherwise occur.
And: Never fix the cabinet only to the back panel, as it’s not designed for that!

I recommend distributing the load across multiple fixing points as much as possible:
- Several rafters as main anchors
- Wide wooden battens mounted across
- Reinforcements on the cabinet back panel (possibly a thicker back panel or additional mounting)
- Don’t forget a base support, as already mentioned.
Important: Use screws of suitable length to ensure load-bearing capacity. Short screws will not hold under such a load.
If possible: work with a second person, as positioning on sloped ceilings is often tricky.
