Hello everyone,

After seeing several discussions about robotic vacuum cleaners in various threads here, we are increasingly convinced that we want to get one of these devices.

The Vorwerk Kobold VR200 and also the VR100 robotic vacuums, which have been mentioned here multiple times, seem quite expensive to me (749 and 599 euros, respectively).

So I went to the website of my trusted online retailer and searched for "robotic vacuum." Then I selected the robotic vacuum cleaner category: 161 results. Prices ranged from around 75 euros to nearly 900 euros.

One model that caught my eye was the Philips FC8820/01 because it reportedly allows you to point the remote control at dirt if something falls on the floor, and it will vacuum it up.

Does anyone have experience with these devices? Can anyone recommend other models?
Do they always only clean the room where you place them, or do they clean the entire floor (assuming the doors are open)?

My requirements:
  • Initially, only one device for the ground floor, possibly another for the upper floor later.
  • Living area about 92 m² (990 sq ft) on the ground floor, with the largest room about 55 m² (592 sq ft).
  • Charging station (I don’t want to plug the device in manually every time).
  • Good cleaning performance.
  • Not excessively noisy (even though we are mostly not at home).
  • Good price/performance ratio.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

Have you gone for it, Jochen?

No, my wife didn’t want a little helper.

I’ve been back at work for two days now and I’m glad I don’t have to vacuum in the evenings anymore. Everything is spotless!

For us, the little guy is a real relief.

However, it takes some discipline regarding cables lying around (PS4 and other devices the kids use), socks, and everything else that could get dragged across the apartment.
It works great now, especially after two phone charging cables fell victim to the little guy. The kids not only unplug the cables now, but also put them away properly once their phones are charged.

Today, we borrowed a VR200 as a loaner from the hardware store. We are supposed to return it on Monday.
First impression: It really sucks up a lot. But at first, it only wanted to clean the dining room and the fireplace room. It ignored the other rooms for now. Maybe it can only learn two rooms per day so as not to overwhelm its delicate memory.

I will keep you updated. If one moves in, it will probably be a "crumb monster."

The Kobold does not save the room layouts. It determines the areas to vacuum anew each day.
It is important not to make any significant changes while it is cleaning.
This means no moving chairs or opening/closing doors in the area it is currently covering. That tends to confuse it.

Yesterday, I forgot to keep the bathroom door closed. Unfortunately, I noticed too late that it had already briefly entered that room. So, I closed the door as it was about to go back in that direction. After the fourth attempt (starting, stopping, turning, starting again...) to enter the bathroom, I gave up. Five minutes later, it came out again and marked its cleaning cycle as complete.

At first, we rearranged things or moved obstacles out of the way briefly. As a result: much longer vacuuming times, frequent recharging, and a rather confused Kobold.

Are these robot vacuums nowadays quite widespread? I haven’t really looked into them much until I read about them here now.
