Hello!
During the construction of our new house, we had the electrician run only a CAT 7 cable for the doorbell, assuming I could easily connect a doorbell with an integrated camera to it. I believe this was a mistake. After moving in and doing some research, I found out that these integrated video doorbells usually require a 230 V power supply and send the video via Wi-Fi to a screen or smartphone. Unfortunately, I cannot supply 230 V through a CAT 7 cable.

Now my question is: does anyone know of a doorbell under 200 euros that can be powered via the CAT cable and can send video either through that cable or via Wi-Fi? The Ring Doorbell has very good reviews online. It either needs a battery (which is not ideal for me) or 12–24 V power from a doorbell transformer. In theory, could I supply this voltage over the CAT cable, or is the required current too high for the cable’s conductor cross-section?

Hi, please search for Dahua or, if you’re willing to pay double, the German importer Goliath and Hybrid IP video door intercom system. The system is powered via network cable using PoE (Power over Ethernet). It works well and offers additional features such as receiving a call through an app on your smartphone when someone rings outside, recording, leaving a video message, and so on. Whether you can find one used for under 200, you’ll have to check. The price is quite aggressive for a video doorbell. But maybe you can also find something from the own brand of a major online retailer called Ring Video Doorbell.

There are also PoE doorbells. For these, you would only need to add a relatively inexpensive injector (which is unnecessary if you already have a PoE switch installed) – I think this is the cleanest and simplest solution.

Our Dahua (turm punkt tech) video doorbell with PoE, camera, fingerprint sensor, and RFID costs about 500€ net (EXW!).

200€ is extremely difficult (impossible). Just the mounting frame and covers cost around 100€, the basic module (with camera and doorbell) is currently 166.4€ EXW, RRP 416€ 😉. But a monitor is always needed for setup, adding another good 100€ EXW.

A friendly dealer charges about 550€ net for the complete package...

Thank you. Okay, then PoE doorbells are probably out due to cost reasons. How about the alternative of powering a Ring Doorbell via the CAT cable with 24 V?

Strictly speaking, it depends on the length of the cable and how precisely the 24 V need to be delivered, but generally, 24 V should not be a problem even over AWG 23 cable. However, I would still recommend a PoE-capable door intercom system.
