Hello everyone,

After seeing several discussions about robotic vacuum cleaners in various threads here, we are increasingly convinced that we want to get one of these devices.

The Vorwerk Kobold VR200 and also the VR100 robotic vacuums, which have been mentioned here multiple times, seem quite expensive to me (749 and 599 euros, respectively).

So I went to the website of my trusted online retailer and searched for "robotic vacuum." Then I selected the robotic vacuum cleaner category: 161 results. Prices ranged from around 75 euros to nearly 900 euros.

One model that caught my eye was the Philips FC8820/01 because it reportedly allows you to point the remote control at dirt if something falls on the floor, and it will vacuum it up.

Does anyone have experience with these devices? Can anyone recommend other models?
Do they always only clean the room where you place them, or do they clean the entire floor (assuming the doors are open)?

My requirements:
  • Initially, only one device for the ground floor, possibly another for the upper floor later.
  • Living area about 92 m² (990 sq ft) on the ground floor, with the largest room about 55 m² (592 sq ft).
  • Charging station (I don’t want to plug the device in manually every time).
  • Good cleaning performance.
  • Not excessively noisy (even though we are mostly not at home).
  • Good price/performance ratio.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

So far, I haven’t had any experience with this type of vacuuming, but for our new build next year, we will probably get one based on the recommendation of our architect!

Originally, I wanted a central vacuum system (friends who built 10 years ago also installed one and are very happy). When I mentioned this idea to my architect, she just looked at me wide-eyed in surprise and immediately recommended robot vacuum cleaners instead, as most of her clients choose those nowadays.

A central vacuum system would have cost us at least €4,000 (€4,000). For that amount, I can set up a small, hardworking helper on each of my three floors.

We returned the VR 200 and will not get another one for now. The concept is still too undeveloped for us.
Also, we simply don’t have the time for another maintenance issue.
We will look at the next model and make a new decision then.

Who says? The architect??? Then they have little or no knowledge...

It’s certainly not a cheap vacuum cleaner, but €4,000 is exaggerated. The material alone for three floors plus the garage cost us just under €1,300. Just the piping with the vacuum inlets cost me €220 in electrical conduit, and this leaves all options open for the future (the central unit will only be purchased once the essential expenses are covered).

No, I asked the price directly from the manufacturer of my acquaintance!

Then maybe try asking a different manufacturer – they generally have the most impressive price expectations (see also laundry chute).

Note: When building, usually don’t settle for just one quote – unless you are satisfied with it yourself.

Well, maybe think about it for a moment. If doing the maximum amount of self-performed work without a vacuum device already costs over 1500, why should an all-in price of 4000 be considered so expensive? I believe the craftsmen don’t work for free, and they also have to factor in a 5-year warranty in their costs.
