Hello everyone,

After seeing several discussions about robotic vacuum cleaners in various threads here, we are increasingly convinced that we want to get one of these devices.

The Vorwerk Kobold VR200 and also the VR100 robotic vacuums, which have been mentioned here multiple times, seem quite expensive to me (749 and 599 euros, respectively).

So I went to the website of my trusted online retailer and searched for "robotic vacuum." Then I selected the robotic vacuum cleaner category: 161 results. Prices ranged from around 75 euros to nearly 900 euros.

One model that caught my eye was the Philips FC8820/01 because it reportedly allows you to point the remote control at dirt if something falls on the floor, and it will vacuum it up.

Does anyone have experience with these devices? Can anyone recommend other models?
Do they always only clean the room where you place them, or do they clean the entire floor (assuming the doors are open)?

My requirements:
  • Initially, only one device for the ground floor, possibly another for the upper floor later.
  • Living area about 92 m² (990 sq ft) on the ground floor, with the largest room about 55 m² (592 sq ft).
  • Charging station (I don’t want to plug the device in manually every time).
  • Good cleaning performance.
  • Not excessively noisy (even though we are mostly not at home).
  • Good price/performance ratio.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

No idea, but so far it lasts longer, depending on the filter. I can understand some complaints; for example, if the vacuum gets stuck in larger children's toys (e.g., ride-on tractor with trailer), it does resume cleaning properly after getting free, but then it can’t find the charging base and might run out of battery in a corner because it thinks it needs to go through there. Fortunately, this happens rarely.

I can’t really contribute to that anymore. Our kids have already claimed both of our cars.

But he tore up some USB cables, which I’m not too concerned about since they weren’t mine. He’s also dragged around socks and left them lying around at some point. But now we have a rule: If you release the robot vacuum without checking the floor first, it’s your own fault.
So far, I can’t complain.

We’ll just have to see about the filters. It’s unbelievable how much dust he picks up when emptying it.

Yeah. What he drags in here isn’t exactly light either. But apart from that, we find a good handful of cat hair in the container every day, which really saves a lot of time and keeps things reasonably clean (as it usually is with small children).

I can totally understand that. We have a Norwegian Forest–Maine Coon mix cat that sheds fur on the carpet in every room upstairs.

The cat hair was the main reason we started thinking about buying one. Since I received the robot vacuum as a gift, I’m considering whether it makes sense to get another one for the ground floor. In the old house, the cat hair wasn’t as noticeable because we had cork and laminate flooring.

We have two Norwegian Forrest Cats, probably similar to your extremely fine hair, but infinitely cuddly. However, if you don’t vacuum for a few days, it’s like in the old cowboy movies—round clumps of hair fly around.

Yes, ours is also cuddly but doesn’t like to be cuddled. However, it always stays close to us. And the hair tufts... true!
