Hello everyone,

After seeing several discussions about robotic vacuum cleaners in various threads here, we are increasingly convinced that we want to get one of these devices.

The Vorwerk Kobold VR200 and also the VR100 robotic vacuums, which have been mentioned here multiple times, seem quite expensive to me (749 and 599 euros, respectively).

So I went to the website of my trusted online retailer and searched for "robotic vacuum." Then I selected the robotic vacuum cleaner category: 161 results. Prices ranged from around 75 euros to nearly 900 euros.

One model that caught my eye was the Philips FC8820/01 because it reportedly allows you to point the remote control at dirt if something falls on the floor, and it will vacuum it up.

Does anyone have experience with these devices? Can anyone recommend other models?
Do they always only clean the room where you place them, or do they clean the entire floor (assuming the doors are open)?

My requirements:
  • Initially, only one device for the ground floor, possibly another for the upper floor later.
  • Living area about 92 m² (990 sq ft) on the ground floor, with the largest room about 55 m² (592 sq ft).
  • Charging station (I don’t want to plug the device in manually every time).
  • Good cleaning performance.
  • Not excessively noisy (even though we are mostly not at home).
  • Good price/performance ratio.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

No, that costs 1500 euros including the suction device – read carefully. And a company that sells the systems normally does not install them – so I assume the 4000 euros is more likely for self-installation or plus installation costs.

Who says? The architect??? Then she has little or no knowledge...

It's certainly not a cheap vacuum system, but 4k is exaggerated. Our pure material costs for three floors plus garage are just under 1300 euros. Just the piping with the vacuum inlets cost me 220 euros in electrical labor, and that keeps all options open for later (the central unit will only be installed once the essential expenses are covered).

You didn’t write about having the central unit, but that you don’t have it yet... Regarding reading the topic; you wrote that it sounds like you don’t have it. Still, that’s a poor comparison because, first of all, it excludes contractor costs, and then it also depends on the number of valves etc., and there are certainly price and quality differences both for that and the unit itself (depending on how much power or comfort and so on you want). So it’s better that the architect estimates 4k instead of 2.5k and it ends up being more expensive later because the requirements are higher...

Or the manufacturer provides more information first.

No, not a bad comparison, see my last post regarding the distributor’s offer.

And I’m not saying it sounds like it’s without it—just because you interpret it that way. I said “pure material costs [...] are around [...] 1300 euros” and then “Only the piping [...] with the suction boxes cost me 220 euros in EL,” so what’s unclear about that?

And if I had 3 more boxes, that would maybe be 100–150 euros more in material costs. So completely negligible...

Of course, buffers are good, but the architect advised against them for cost reasons. One manufacturer also does not include a buffer, but as a reputable manufacturer/distributor, they should provide a serious offer based on the specifications.

Reading your post, you also mentioned that the central unit will only be purchased by you at a later time! This makes it misleading to assume that it is included in the costs. That’s why I quoted the entire text! And yet, you are comparing apples and oranges in terms of price here. The 4k is not about how much the manufacturer would have charged for your installation in your house with your equipment. However, one can agree that it is definitely advisable to obtain several offers.

Oh Saruss, 4k is simply overpriced unless you are planning a mansion of 400 m² (4,300 sq ft).

And I just assume that’s not the case... but what experience do you have with central vacuum systems?
