Hello everyone,

After seeing several discussions about robotic vacuum cleaners in various threads here, we are increasingly convinced that we want to get one of these devices.

The Vorwerk Kobold VR200 and also the VR100 robotic vacuums, which have been mentioned here multiple times, seem quite expensive to me (749 and 599 euros, respectively).

So I went to the website of my trusted online retailer and searched for "robotic vacuum." Then I selected the robotic vacuum cleaner category: 161 results. Prices ranged from around 75 euros to nearly 900 euros.

One model that caught my eye was the Philips FC8820/01 because it reportedly allows you to point the remote control at dirt if something falls on the floor, and it will vacuum it up.

Does anyone have experience with these devices? Can anyone recommend other models?
Do they always only clean the room where you place them, or do they clean the entire floor (assuming the doors are open)?

My requirements:
  • Initially, only one device for the ground floor, possibly another for the upper floor later.
  • Living area about 92 m² (990 sq ft) on the ground floor, with the largest room about 55 m² (592 sq ft).
  • Charging station (I don’t want to plug the device in manually every time).
  • Good cleaning performance.
  • Not excessively noisy (even though we are mostly not at home).
  • Good price/performance ratio.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

We have a Dyson DC Animal Pro and a large Vorwerk vacuum on each floor. We are very satisfied with this combination. But at some point, we also plan to get a Vorwerk robot vacuum.

After one week of use, I’ve concluded that it was a good idea. Over the weekend, I timed myself thoroughly vacuuming only the upper floor (except for the bathroom, which is carpeted throughout) with the large vacuum: it took about 45 minutes. I can hardly get under the beds as well as the mini vacuum does.

We don’t have a cordless vacuum and don’t plan to get one for now. Each floor has a “large” vacuum cleaner, and now we also have a shared Wall-E.

For the time being, this setup is completely sufficient for us.

A central vacuum system was never an option for us. Some friends have one and really like it, but we were not at all enthusiastic about it. Personally, I would have preferred to plan a laundry chute to the utility room instead.

I believe the trend is really moving towards small helper devices alongside a regular vacuum cleaner. Whether this will be cordless or corded remains to be seen. Of course, cordless vacuums are generally more convenient, but they might also be more expensive in the same performance range.

Regarding central vacuum systems, for me it’s also about having a long hose that I have to drag around.

And as you already mentioned, a laundry chute to the utility room would be preferable.

Since I still have some time before deciding on the small helper device, I’m very interested in your long-term tests and reviews.

A central vacuum system was not an option for us. After all, you still have to do the vacuuming yourself with that...

Yes, definitely Björn, I meant in addition to the manual vacuum cleaner.

Oh, I see.

However, that would be a rather expensive addition. A cordless vacuum cleaner is enough for that.
