Yes, we experienced this a few years ago as well. It sounds like a spontaneous break caused by nickel-sulfate inclusion. This occurs in about 2% of all doors, is a material defect, and should normally be covered by the warranty. However, proving this can be difficult.
We were lucky at the time because, although the door shattered completely, the fragments stayed in place long enough for me to take a photo. In the picture, you could see that the cracks started somewhere in the middle of the door itself, so it was not due to any impact or similar.
I think this will be a case for your glass breakage insurance.
