To hide the range hood and the exhaust duct, I built a spice rack:
https://www.hausbau-forum.de/images/2e66ed8a34a409ef3ae56ab6944025e7.jpg

It was mainly repurposing leftover materials: there were some leftovers from the side panels, and we also had 2 extra doors (which had pre-drilled holes because after installing the first 2 doors, we decided to mount the handles vertically instead of horizontally...)

The installation is screwed in and can be easily removed if any work is needed on the range hood.
The shelves are deliberately not very deep, but it would be possible to attach an additional spice rack inside the door if needed, as there is enough space.

Maybe a tip for those who aren’t sure what to do with an upper cabinet.

hi Wolfgang,
Looks great.
There are always leftovers, so it’s good that you made useful use of them and have everything ready exactly where it belongs.
Maybe others are interested...
How much depth is there above the motor (how tall is it?) inside the area?
I’m asking because...
if the shelves are further back at the top, small shelves could still be installed on the inside of the door for spices, small items, etc.

Hello robi,

that was exactly the idea, and I had already mentioned it. You could also screw some spice racks (there are various wire ones available) to the inside of the door.

I will measure the depth when I get the chance; the kitchen is in our rented granny flat, so I’m not there every day. But you can roughly estimate it based on the row of holes. Our tenant was also very happy with my DIY work—you can see it holds quite a lot.

Hello Wolfgang,
I had the idea of a spice rack in my kitchen 25 years ago, although not from Ikea, but I gave up on it after a few weeks. Due to the moisture from the rising steam, spores formed inside the spice jars and they started to mold. After that, I hung my ladle and other flat items there.

Hello Mr. Rossi,

we have a similar setup in our kitchen – which is about 2 years old but not from IKEA – and so far no issues at all. Maybe the ventilation units back then were not as effective?

Hello, looks good.
Are the shelves attached to the back panel with standard screws?

In my Faktum kitchen, I simply placed a thin plywood back panel in front of the hood cabinet. For the shelves, I drilled a second hole in the cabinet behind the existing ones at the desired spots and installed small grooved boards similar to regular shelf supports.
The available space depends on the model of the extractor hood. In my case, it is 10cm (4 inches).
I haven’t had any moisture issues. It’s an extractor hood with a pull-out visor.
