robi_aus_ffm9 May 2016 18:52Hello everyone,
I want to shorten a 60x60x200 cm (24x24x79 inches) Metod tall cabinet to a width of 57 cm (22.4 inches). It will also get a 40 cm (15.7 inches) high extension on top, which should be shortened in width as well.
The reason...
I have a niche in the hallway that is 57 cm (22.4 inches) wide and 60 cm (24 inches) deep, and I want to use this cabinet as a cleaning cupboard and for collecting waste paper.
So far, I have thought everything through; shortening itself is not a problem. The shelves are okay as well.
The fronts can remain 60 cm (24 inches) wide so they will sit flush against the wall.
Now to the problem:
Has anyone ever shortened the width of Maximera drawers? They have this metal plate at the back that locks into the two side panels. Is the Maximera stable enough if I leave this out and join the parts with wood instead?
Best regards,
robi_aus_ffm

IKEA-Experte9 May 2016 20:31With the RATIONELL drawers from Blum, it was so easy because you could use the back panel supports from the Tandembox plus. Unfortunately, MAXIMERA is specific to IKEA. Just cut out 3cm (1¼ inches) from the middle of the back panel, saw off the lower curved part, and rivet the metal piece behind the two remaining back panel sections.

robi_aus_ffm9 May 2016 20:49Hello Ikea expert,
the idea is good, but...
I don’t like cutting metal.
When I was cutting the rails for the wall cabinets, I already thought, "I have tinnitus in my sight," seeing only flickering lights.
Best regards
But it will probably come down to that...
Or I won’t use a drawer for waste paper and will simply put a plastic box inside.

IKEA-Experte9 May 2016 20:59You can easily solve the problem when cutting metal by having your partner do the sawing.
Alternatively, you can build a pull-out drawer entirely yourself using a kit.

Do you have any examples?

yeah, but...
the thing is too small and doesn’t make use of the width and depth...
@IKEA-Experte,
thanks for the links, I’ll look into it ☺
