ᐅ Ikea Besta: How can I make the drawers slide more smoothly?

Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought an Ikea Besta shelving unit with drawers. Unfortunately, I have the problem that the drawers often feel a bit stiff and don’t slide as smoothly when opening or closing as I would expect. It’s not that the runners are completely blocked, but the movement feels rather rough and somewhat uneven.

I am therefore interested in learning about possible ways to make the drawers of the Ikea Besta system slide more smoothly. For example, should the drawer slides be cleaned, lubricated, or replaced? Are there any experiences with specific lubricants or assembly tips that improve the function?

I would appreciate a detailed response or experience reports on this topic. Thank you in advance!

Does it matter if I buy a silicone spray marketed as a multipurpose spray, or should I go for specialized furniture or plastic sprays?

For Ikea Besta, a silicone spray that is specifically suitable for use on both plastic and metal is recommended. Since the drawer slides usually consist of a combination of metal and plastic parts, the spray should not damage or cause swelling of these materials.

Are there Ikea Besta drawer slide models where you can replace the rollers or other parts?

The rollers or wheels are generally not available as individual replacement parts. If there is significant wear, the entire drawer system or the drawer slide is usually replaced. Ikea sometimes offers replacement parts themselves, but this is more the exception than the rule.

I think everyone is familiar with the issue of “drawers not sliding smoothly”!

Fortunately, the effort to fix it is minimal. Silicone spray is really invaluable – just don’t overdo it, or it will get greasy.

If the drawers are really sticking, also check if anything is caught in the track profile, like small paper bits or similar. That can prevent smooth movement. A little cleaning and some spray, and they’ll almost glide on their own.

For Besta drawers, it also helps to check the screws – over time they can loosen, causing the drawer to not sit properly in place.

Just a quick note: Please avoid using oily lubricants, as they only attract dirt and make things worse. Silicone spray or PTFE spray are the best options.

Hello doka67,

I understand that you are looking for the most sustainable and clean solution. Sometimes it helps to completely remove the drawer slides and check for proper alignment. If the rails are bent or warped, this can significantly affect smooth movement.

Besides cleaning and lubricating, you should also check whether the rails are still properly parallel and straight. Pay attention to any necessary adjustments.

Personally, I have had good experiences with PTFE spray and use it sparingly from time to time on my Besta cabinets.

If the problem doesn’t improve, you can also purchase and install fully encircling soft-close rails for Besta, which are much higher quality than the standard model.

I hope this helps!

Or is the whole drawer unit usually replaced?

As mentioned before, replacement parts for individual rolling or guiding components are rarely available for Ikea Besta. Unfortunately, the system is not designed modularly to allow for swapping worn parts.

Therefore, preventive measures such as proper cleaning and occasional lubrication are recommended to extend the lifespan and maintain smooth operation.

If a replacement becomes necessary, it is often more economical to replace the entire drawer or slide rail.
