Hello everyone,
I want to shorten a 60x60x200 cm (24x24x79 inches) Metod tall cabinet to a width of 57 cm (22.4 inches). It will also get a 40 cm (15.7 inches) high extension on top, which should be shortened in width as well.
The reason...
I have a niche in the hallway that is 57 cm (22.4 inches) wide and 60 cm (24 inches) deep, and I want to use this cabinet as a cleaning cupboard and for collecting waste paper.
So far, I have thought everything through; shortening itself is not a problem. The shelves are okay as well.
The fronts can remain 60 cm (24 inches) wide so they will sit flush against the wall.

Now to the problem:
Has anyone ever shortened the width of Maximera drawers? They have this metal plate at the back that locks into the two side panels. Is the Maximera stable enough if I leave this out and join the parts with wood instead?

Not in depth, but two placed side by side fit exactly in width.

No depth issue, but two side by side fit exactly in the width.

Yeah, that’s true. I’m still thinking about it. I’m hoping to find the “optimal” solution somewhere.
The system with the rail at the bottom is great; I like it.
I’ve seen it with Hailo (where I got my kitchen waste separation system, excellent) and other waste sorting specialists.
My ideal solution would be rails at the bottom, then one large container (up to 53 x 53 cm (21 x 21 inches)) but not too tall (up to 30 cm (12 inches)), just for paper.

We’ll see, I still have time.
The packaged tall cabinet has been stored in the basement for quite a while.

It will probably come down to me building the custom inner drawer with the corresponding rails myself...
The “fundgrube” is looking forward to my visit.

P.S.
I’ve now found something I like; I’m building the drawer myself and will use a full-extension bottom mount slide from Blum.

The Tandem or Movento undermount drawer slides are also nice, but you have to build the drawer box completely yourself. They are also available for floor mounting, which is convenient if a side hinge gets in the way.

The Polish option is cheaper than Blum again.

Even cheaper are the slides used for the KOMPLEMENT drawers from the discount outlet, but I wouldn’t consider those to be good enough.

This week I’m working the night shift and, as promised, I went to the IKEA clearance section today.
I found some great bargains that are now waiting in the basement for autumn.

Total cost was 40 euros, minus a 20% IKEA family card discount on clearance items (Thursdays)!!
= A total of 32 euros instead of 138 euros.

I’m thrilled—they must have known I needed those parts...

Maybe in the next three months I’ll also find a b60 x t60 x h40 cm (b24 x d24 x h16 inches) top unit and a 120 cm (47 inch) high, 60 cm (24 inch) deep Metod side panel for internal organization with the corresponding pre-drilled holes.

I’ll buy the fronts new, since the chances of finding the desired ones in good quality in the clearance section are slim.

Thanks to today’s bargain, that’s exactly what I’ll do. I just have to put up with the squeaking noise while cutting...

Best regards, robi

Thanks again for the helpful tip.

Earplugs definitely make it more bearable.

Hello everyone,
today I found the previous model (702.046.16) of the Utrusta cleaning cabinet system in the IKEA clearance section for 19 euros.

Does anyone know what was changed? It looks pretty much the same...
Here is the new one...

I don’t see any difference...
