ᐅ Replacing IKEA Malm drawer handles – simple or challenging?

Hello everyone, I found the drawer handles on my Ikea Malm sideboard somewhat unsatisfactory and am considering replacing them with different handles. My question is: How difficult or time-consuming is it to remove the existing handles on Ikea Malm drawers and replace them with new ones?

I know that Malm dressers usually come with pre-drilled holes for handles, but how is the fit with other handles? Do you need special tools or experience? Or is a regular screwdriver enough?

Is there anything important to keep in mind—perhaps regarding the attachment or stability?

I look forward to your opinions and experiences, and any tips on suitable replacement handles. Thanks!

Additional to the ongoing discussion:

When you buy a new handle, make sure the screws are included and that they are the correct length. Sometimes new handles come with longer or shorter screws, which can cause problems.

Also, pay attention to the thickness of the drawer front, as screws that are too short won’t hold properly, and screws that are too long may protrude through the front.

If you are not confident with DIY tasks, work carefully, use a small Phillips screwdriver, and first test on one drawer. With some patience, this is easily manageable.

Good luck! 🙂

The IKEA Malm dresser uses Phillips screws, usually 16 to 25 mm (0.6 to 1 inch) long, depending on the handle.
Thanks for the precise details, that’s very helpful.

I’m planning to replace the handles this weekend. If I understand correctly, when the new handles have a different screw hole spacing, I would need to drill new holes in the front panel, which is the challenging part.

Do you have any recommendations for handles that fit the Malm perfectly without needing to drill or modify anything? Durability and strength for regular use are very important to me.

Looking forward to your tips!
