I am planning to fit alternative handles on the doors of my IKEA Kallax unit. My main question is: Which types of alternative handles, levers, or opening mechanisms are compatible or recommended for Kallax doors without compromising stability and appearance? I am particularly interested in options that allow for easy installation, possibly without drilling, or at least with minimal modifications. Do you have any experience with handles from other furniture ranges, leather handles, rope handles, or even handle strips? Which dimensions should I consider, and are there models that I can confidently purchase afterwards? I would also appreciate any installation tips and material recommendations.

Leather handles work well when attached with small screws. Rope handles are also a simple DIY option.

Regarding compatibility: Kallax doors are usually 15 mm (0.6 inches) thick. This means handles should be suitable for this thickness or mounted with longer screws.

A common solution is to use cabinet handles from the kitchen sector, as these often come in the same standard sizes (96 or 128 mm (3.8 or 5 inches) hole spacing).

Tip: Pay attention to whether the handles need to be recessed or surface-mounted to avoid damaging the door. If you prefer not to drill holes, you can try double-sided tape, although such solutions do not last forever.

If you want to avoid drilling, clamping handles or magnetic openers are an option. Installation is usually done from the back and is non-invasive.

A recommendation: When choosing handles, also consider their durability and ergonomics. Especially for Kallax doors, which are used frequently, a sturdy handle is important.

For leather handles, you should pay attention to high-quality materials and strong stitching, as otherwise they can wear out quickly.

In addition to the previous explanations: The Kallax carcass can easily accommodate handles with a drilling depth of up to approximately 40 mm (1.6 inches). For very large or heavy handles, it should be checked whether the screws affect the back panel.

Alternatively, recessed handle grooves can be used. These are very discreet and preserve the material but require precise milling.
