Hello everyone,
I am planning to replace the handles on my IKEA Billy bookcases to give them a more personal look. However, I am unsure which models are actually compatible. The original handles have standardized hole spacing, but I have read that not every handle fits easily because some might have different screw lengths or mounting methods.
Can anyone tell me what exactly I need to pay attention to when replacing the handles on Billy bookcases? Are there specific measurements, screw types, or particular models that work especially well? I would also like to know if there are alternatives that are easy to install without needing to drill new holes or make major modifications to the bookcase.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks to everyone who responded in such detail,
I am now really sure that I need handles with a 128 mm (5 inch) hole spacing and screws about 30 mm (1¼ inch) long. The information about material thickness and screw length is very helpful. I will measure the dimensions precisely again before ordering.
Does anyone have tips on how to remove old handles without causing any damage? Some handles seem to be really tight, and I want to avoid scratching the surface or the cabinet.
Looking forward to your experiences!

1. Choose the right screwdriver to avoid slipping on the screws.
2. If the screws are very tight, apply a drop of oil (e.g., WD-40) to the threads and let it sit for a short time.
3. Loosen the handles with gentle back-and-forth movements instead of pulling straight off.
4. If the paint or surface is delicate, you can protect the wood by applying masking tape around the screws.
Using these tips together should help prevent any damage.
