Hello everyone,
I am planning to replace the handles on my IKEA Billy bookcases to give them a more personal look. However, I am unsure which models are actually compatible. The original handles have standardized hole spacing, but I have read that not every handle fits easily because some might have different screw lengths or mounting methods.
Can anyone tell me what exactly I need to pay attention to when replacing the handles on Billy bookcases? Are there specific measurements, screw types, or particular models that work especially well? I would also like to know if there are alternatives that are easy to install without needing to drill new holes or make major modifications to the bookcase.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Ernati,
Some time ago, I replaced the handles on my BILLY shelf myself and can give you a brief guide:
1. Check the hole spacing: Most BILLY shelves with drawers or doors have a hole spacing of 128 mm (5 inches). It is important to measure from the center of one mounting hole to the center of the other.
2. Screw length: The original IKEA handles usually use screws about 30 mm (1.2 inches) long. New handles should come with similar screws, or the screws may need to be adjusted separately if the board thickness is different.
3. Mounting type: Most handles are attached from the inside, so handles with screws from the outside are not compatible unless you want to drill new holes.
4. Material and style: When choosing handles, besides compatibility, pay attention to thickness and material so the screws hold properly.
Summary: Look for 128 mm (5 inches) hole spacing, approximately 30 mm (1.2 inches) screw length, and that the handles are mounted from the inside. IKEA models and many third-party suppliers specify these measurements.
If you want, I can also recommend some specific models!

I would like to add that the material thickness of the shelf front—usually around 16 mm (0.6 inches)—also matters. So if you choose particularly thick or thin handles, the supplied screws might not fit.
If you want custom or very special handles, it’s worth checking the screw length in the set beforehand or organizing replacement screws of the right length if needed. Many hardware stores also offer screws pre-cut to size, which can be easily shortened.
My tip: It’s best to buy handles with standard measurements or explicit BILLY compatibility to avoid adjustments later. 🙂
Thank you for the responses so far; they have been very helpful!
Can anyone tell me if IKEA offers replacement handles specifically compatible with BILLY bookcases? Possibly some that look a bit more modern or sturdy? I feel like the original ones are somewhat plain.
Also, how does the screw length for BILLY bookcases with door fronts compare to those for BILLY drawers? Are there differences? I want to make sure I order the correct screws.
