Hello everyone,
I have been using the Ikea Billy bookcase for several years now and am generally very satisfied. However, recently I have noticed that the drawers in some Billy models tend to stick or don’t slide smoothly from time to time. My question is: what are the possible reasons why the drawers in Billy bookcases sometimes get stuck?
I am especially interested in whether this is due to the design itself, assembly errors, material properties, or perhaps environmental factors such as humidity or temperature playing a role.
How can one prevent this issue or fix it to ensure long-term functionality?
I look forward to your insights and experiences!

Good morning Rulifa,
I know that problem, it can be really frustrating sometimes! 🙂
I think it often comes down to the simple design. The rails and runners are not exactly top quality, and when the wood expands due to humidity or the shelf becomes slightly warped, the drawers tend to stick.
Also, it could be due to less precise assembly. Even a slightly angled installation is enough to prevent the drawer from operating smoothly.
Sometimes it helps to remove the drawers, clean the rails, and apply some wax or silicone spray. That often makes them run more smoothly again.

Hello everyone,
To better explain the causes of drawers sticking in BILLY systems, I would like to break down the issue a bit.
1. Moisture-related swelling and shrinking:
BILLY shelves are usually made of particleboard, which can be sensitive to moisture. This causes the material to swell, putting pressure on the drawer slides and causing the drawer to stick.
2. Installation:
Imprecise installation of the runners (for example, not parallel or at the wrong height) can cause the drawers to tilt and come off their tracks.
3. Quality of the drawer slides:
Cheap or dirty slides can increase friction.
4. Environmental factors:
Humid rooms and temperature fluctuations cause the wood to expand and contract, which promotes sticking.
Tips:
- Check that the slides are properly installed and parallel.
- Clean runners and sliders and, if needed, use silicone spray.
- Place the shelving unit in an area with lower humidity.
- If swelling is severe, consider sanding the affected parts.
I hope this helps to identify and resolve the problem.

That might be true, but to be honest, I think IKEA uses the cheapest material they can find and hopes no one notices. No wonder everything sticks. A bit of quality control would be interesting. This is a replacement product, isn’t it?
Hey everyone!
I actually think BILLY is great, especially for the price. 🙂 I used to have issues with the fittings too, but after oiling the tracks, everything runs smoothly for me!
Just tackle the problem calmly, don’t get frustrated, and it will work out!
Sure, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some success with a bit of maintenance.
Keep at it and good luck!
