Hello everyone,

I have an Ikea Metod wooden countertop (rather dark oiled) and would like to know how to optimize its cleaning to keep the material looking great for a long time and to avoid damage such as watermarks, discoloration, or stained spots.

I am mainly referring to daily or regular cleaning. What products and methods do you recommend for this type of wooden countertop?

Which care products should I use? Are there specific things to definitely avoid, especially when dealing with water or cleaning agents?

I look forward to detailed tips and experiences, as it is important to me that the countertop stays in good condition for a long time and requires as little maintenance effort as possible.

I’m open to suggestions on which care oils you recommend or if you use alternative home remedies that are gentle.

I sometimes use a simple natural oil that I also use for my children’s wooden toys. It is very mild and absorbs well. If you want your countertop to be protected without a glossy finish, this could be an option. Wipe off afterward to avoid any oily residue.

I avoid using wet cloths entirely, but a damp cloth—yes, just like Ixvin mentioned—is fine.

I stay away from vinegar because I don’t want to risk altering the surface.

Tena44, it is best to use a damp cloth with mild soap, well wrung out. Avoid abrasive cleaners. Use care oil as needed, but not too often.

What I find most important is to avoid aggressive chemicals and abrasive sponges; instead, use soft cloths or microfiber towels.

I completely agree; I also see the risk of causing secondary damage through excessive cleaning. My recommendation is to document all relevant steps thoroughly.

Anyone claiming a product is effective should test and document its use under realistic conditions over several weeks. This is especially important for IKEA countertops, where the surface is often only lightly oiled.

If you notice a matte spot, make sure to record it as well, rather than reflexively applying oil or varnish.

It’s helpful to proceed carefully and be patient.

Hello everyone,

When caring for Metod wooden countertops, I think it’s important to highlight the following points:

- Regular, gentle cleaning with minimal moisture
- Treating the surface with a suitable maintenance oil every 3 to 6 months
- Avoid leaving standing moisture on the surface, as this can cause the wood to swell
- For stains, first try a mild cleaner; never use strong chemicals or sandpaper, as these can damage the surface

I also found it helpful to re-treat the countertop during summer, as dry air can make the wood brittle.

Patience is really important when caring for wood. Immediate results are rare.

I want to clearly emphasize once again that quickly wiping up spilled liquids is essential.

More than once, I have seen water stains caused by carelessness that were very difficult to remove.

Once you have internalized this, you can effectively prevent potential problems.
