Hello everyone,

I recently installed the IKEA Metod kitchen countertop and was wondering how to best protect it from stains and scratches. The surface of the Metod panels is not solid wood but a coated particleboard, right? Therefore, I’m not sure how resistant the material actually is—especially against food stains like berries or red wine and against mechanical wear from cutting or cooking.

Are there specific care products for this, or is it essential to always use cutting boards and mats? I would really appreciate any tips on products that work well in everyday use without damaging the finish or sealant.

Thank you in advance!

To protect Metod countertops from discoloration, you should always use cutting boards and wipe up liquids immediately. To prevent scratches, avoid direct contact with sharp or rough objects.

Cleaning products are rarely necessary; often a damp cloth and mild soap are sufficient.

Hello Legla10,

Your observation that the Metod countertops are coated particleboard is correct. This means the surface is more sensitive than solid wood or stone. Therefore, it is advisable to protect it by avoiding direct contact with harsh substances and mechanical stress.

To prevent discoloration, I recommend:
- Wiping up liquids immediately, especially dyes like berries, coffee, or red wine
- Using cutting boards when chopping, as cuts permanently damage the surface

For cleaning, use mild dish soap and soft cloths—harsh cleaners can damage the surface.

There are also special care oils or coatings for wood countertops, but these are generally not suitable for Metod laminate tops. Your best protection is careful handling and regular cleaning.

If you have major concerns, you might consider using thin glass cutting boards or heat-resistant mats on the countertop. This way, you can protect the surface and still work directly on it when needed.

I hope this helps!

I completely agree; that’s basically the foundation. The Metod surfaces really aren’t made for heavy-duty use—so as a kitchen enthusiast, you shouldn’t just cut directly on them with your vegetable knife. Otherwise, you’ll end up with scratches and dents that are visible.

Exactly! I once tried to remove a coffee stain with a strong cleaning agent—and just like that, the glossy surface became a bit duller. So you really have to be careful there.

My tip: To help prevent discoloration, apply a little mineral oil to a soft cloth and rub it in gently now and then. It doesn’t make the surface highly scratch-resistant but helps liquids from soaking in and stains from setting.

One more thing: Never place hot items directly on the countertop! Heat damage becomes visible after a few weeks if you’re not careful.
