Hello everyone, I plan to retrofit soft-close mechanisms on my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet doors and then adjust them properly. I want to ensure the doors not only close quietly but are also perfectly aligned, as I have read that improper adjustments can cause issues such as rubbing, incomplete closing, or misalignment.
I have the IKEA Metod frame fronts and know that the original hinges already support soft-close functionality, but my doors currently have the basic hinges installed.
Here are my specific questions:
- Which soft-close modules are definitely compatible with the Metod doors?
- What is the recommended procedure for retrofitting to avoid damage to the wood or hinges?
- Are there any tips for precise adjustment, especially when retrofitting later, to ensure perfect gaps and smooth closing?
I look forward to your experiences and best advice – also welcome are suggestions regarding tools or necessary techniques.

Good morning! I would like to add from my experience:
When adjusting, make sure the door is securely seated in the hinge mounts before you start turning the adjustment screws. This prevents slipping and makes precise work easier.
Soft-close mechanisms often have a screw or a small dial to adjust the damping – you can use this to set the closing speed to your preference.
Be sure to gently close the door after each adjustment to check the correct position. This helps prevent the door from closing too fast or too slow and getting damaged.
If you frequently remove the doors, regularly check the installation and make sure the clips are still firmly in place.

Metod doors with soft-close feature should have at least three adjustment points considered after installation:
- Height adjustment: Adjusted via the screw on the hinge body.
- Lateral adjustment: Adjusted via the screw on the hinge arm.
- Depth adjustment: Screw that moves the door closer to the cabinet edge.
Precise adjustment is essential to achieve even gaps and uniform door alignment. Especially when installed afterwards, it is worth checking the adjustments multiple times.

In my experience, IKEA offers a very well-designed soft-close system for Metod hinges, which can be easily retrofitted.
Important notes:
- The functionality is only guaranteed if the modules are correctly attached to the hinge arm.
- Soft-close works through a small damping mechanism that slows down the closing process, and it is advisable to pay particular attention to the depth adjustment during setup, as this significantly affects the force absorption.
- Additionally, the soft-close mechanisms can be reordered from the store without major difficulties, which is helpful in practice if something does not fit perfectly.
Recommendation: Before retrofitting, check whether your current hinges are even compatible, as IKEA sells different hinge types depending on the furniture.

I have the following specific questions:
- Which soft-close modules are reliably compatible with Metod doors?
- What is the recommended procedure for retrofitting to avoid damage to the wood or hinge?
- Are there any tips for precise adjustment, especially when retrofitting later, to ensure perfect gaps and smooth closing?Regarding these points, I want to add: Even if you have no experience, retrofitting is not difficult. IKEA has solved this quite cleverly.
Buy the soft-close modules that are explicitly designed for Metod hinges. Be careful with older series, as there might be variations.
Installation is very simple – first remove the door, click the soft-close module onto the hinge, then rehang the door.
When adjusting, always work step by step and with small movements; the depth adjustment is especially important here to ensure the doors close flush.
And if you notice the door isn’t closing softly enough, you can still fine-tune the soft-close dampers.
I’ve tried it myself – and it feels really high-quality. It’s definitely worth it!
