Hello everyone,
I am currently planning the installation of the Ikea Metod toe kicks in my new kitchen. A underfloor heating system has been installed there, so I want to be especially careful not to affect the heat output. My specific question is: How should the Ikea Metod toe kicks be installed with underfloor heating to ensure they are securely attached, prevent moisture or heat buildup, and avoid any damage to the heating system? Are there any special instructions or additional steps to consider, for example regarding seals, distances from the floor, or the method of fastening to the cabinet carcass?
I have already checked Ikea’s installation manual, but I couldn’t find any information about underfloor heating. Who has experience or expert knowledge on this?
Thanks in advance!

Does anyone have experience with how securely the strips hold when installed with this small gap?The stability is not affected if the Metod strips are correctly fixed with the marketplace clips. The clips anchor the strips to the cabinet body, not to the floor. Therefore, the stability depends solely on the proper snapping of the clips.
The 5 mm (0.2 inch) gap simply prevents direct contact with the floor but does not compromise the connection between the strip and the kitchen cabinet. It is important not to create additional connections to the floor – otherwise, stresses can occur.
For extra security, flexible clips can also be used, or the baseboard can be separated with joints at corners. This ensures everything remains stable, even when touched or bumped.

- Installing with the original mounting clips at the lower edge of the base cabinet
- Leaving a gap of about 4-6 cm (1.5-2.5 inches) from the floor for heat dissipation
- Avoiding direct gluing or screwing to the floor
- Ensuring well-ventilated base areas to prevent heat build-up and moisture problems
- Using moisture-resistant seals at the joints
I have conducted hygrothermal measurements myself and found that when the baseboards are glued directly, the temperature peaks at the baseboard were about 5°C (9°F) higher compared to having a gap. To prevent material deformation, this simple guideline should definitely be followed.

This clearly explains the thermal risks. Additionally, I would like to add that the choice of materials in the floor baseboard area is crucial when using underfloor heating. Unsuitable plastics or adhesives can become brittle or detach.
Those who want to be on the safe side should also plan the installation so that later removal of the baseboards is possible without leaving any marks. This can be especially important in rental apartments.
