Hello everyone, I have a question where your experience would be very helpful: How do you properly and permanently attach the Ikea Metod baseboards on a floor with integrated underfloor heating?

I understand that there are some important considerations with underfloor heating, such as thermal expansion and surface temperatures. I want to avoid the baseboards warping or affecting the heating function.

Specifically: How do you install the baseboards, which materials or adhesives do you use, and are there any special tips to ensure a secure and clean attachment? Also, any advice on preparing the substrate or dealing with thermal expansion would be great.

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Great topic! For me, the combination of Ikea clips and a heat protection strip between the radiator and the baseboard has proven effective. This way, the pipes are protected, and the baseboards can expand and contract naturally with the heat. It’s really satisfying when everything fits perfectly in the end!

Thank you for the previous answers!

I am especially interested in whether you simply screwed the clips directly onto the screed or if you placed insulation underneath first. My screed is quite smooth, and I want to avoid the clips becoming loose over time.

Also, I am concerned that the baseboards might swell or warp too much due to temperature changes. How do you specifically handle this with Metod?

The screed in my case is smooth; I screwed clips directly to the edge. No additional insulation. No problems for months. I also don’t see any swelling.

This is an important point. Metod baseboards are made of MDF and are laminated. MDF reacts to temperature and humidity. Therefore:

- Let the baseboards acclimate in the room for 1–2 days before installation.
- Leave small expansion gaps at corners and ends during installation.
- You can prevent swelling by following the above conditions and ensuring sufficient air circulation between the baseboard and the floor.

An underlay is not strictly necessary, but if the clips are loose, you can place a thin insulating foil (perimeter foil or impact sound insulation) under the clip, but avoid a thick insulation layer, as this will reduce stability.

These are simple but effective measures that I always recommend when using underfloor heating.

I’m currently dealing with this exact issue. For me, the clips were easy to install, but I do notice some slight tension in certain areas. That’s why I tried not to fit the trim pieces completely flush, to allow for natural expansion.

You shouldn’t stress about this—the trim isn’t rigid forever, and the heating changes with the seasons. I hope it will stabilize over time.

I find it interesting whether this is really a problem of thermal expansion or more due to poor installation.

In my experience, a bit of tension is quite normal, but anyone who installs everything too precisely from the start will create stress later on. Actually, Ikea should have highlighted the special considerations for underfloor heating more clearly in their instructions.
