ᐅ How can I securely attach Ikea Metod kickboards with underfloor heating?

Fredrik4Hello everyone, I am currently planning to install Ikea Metod kitchen base units in my apartment, which has underfloor heating. My question is: How can I fix the Ikea Metod kickboards so that they hold securely, are not damaged by the heat from the underfloor heating, and at the same time do not obstruct the necessary ventilation of the heating system?
I have heard that some adhesives or fixing methods can be problematic due to heat generation and material expansion. I am especially interested in practical tips for mounting the kickboards—possibly solutions with specific clips, adhesives, or screws that have proven to work well.
Perhaps someone has experience or knows official recommendations from Ikea, or professional tips I should consider during installation. Thanks in advance!

Hey Fredrik4, it’s very important that you don’t glue the baseboards directly to the floor—heat needs air circulation, otherwise there will be problems with the heating and the baseboards can warp. Clips are definitely the best option; they allow a bit of movement and hold firm. 😉

Ikea Metod baseboards are usually supplied with special mounting clips, which are generally designed for conventional floors. It is important not to fasten these clips too tightly, as the baseboards can slightly expand due to the heat. If they are fixed too rigidly, there is a risk of tension and material deformation.
Additionally, a small ventilation gap should be planned between the floor and the baseboard. If you are considering gluing, make sure the adhesive is heat-resistant and flexible. Conventional construction adhesives are not suitable in this case.
What exactly does your floor build-up look like? Do you nail or screw the baseboards to the floor or to the kitchen cabinets? This also affects the stability.

I also had concerns back then about warping and the possibility that the baseboards might not last long. My advice: take your time to try out the right method of attachment. If you want to avoid gluing, using a mounting gap with clips is truly the most reliable method. I would also recommend storing the baseboards in the room for a few days beforehand so they can acclimate to the temperature.
For a factual addition: Underfloor heating generates a significant amount of radiant heat, which affects not only the adhesives but also the materials used for baseboards.
- Ikea Metod baseboards are usually made of MDF with a coating that reacts to temperature and humidity fluctuations.
- Clip systems are preferable, as they provide a reversible connection with some flexibility.
- If adhesive application is necessary as an alternative, a flexible, heat-resistant construction adhesive specifically approved for underfloor heating should be used.
- Air circulation should be ensured by maintaining a small gap from the floor to prevent damage to both the heating system and the baseboards.
I recommend carefully reviewing the product data sheets of adhesives and consulting with a specialist retailer on site.
