Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of installing several IKEA Metod cabinets in my kitchen on a relatively uneven floor. Since the wall is not completely straight and the floor has slight irregularities, I am concerned that the cabinets might not be fully stable or could potentially warp due to these uneven surfaces.

My question to the community: What proven methods do you know to install Metod cabinets accurately and securely when the floor is uneven? Are there any tricks to professionally bridge gaps caused by floor irregularities? And how do you handle possible height differences between multiple cabinets to ensure the fronts align nicely and the entire unit remains stable?

I would appreciate any specific tips on leveling materials, adjustment options on the cabinets, or possible modifications during installation.

Best regards!

In such cases, it is advisable to level each Metod cabinet individually before installation and, if necessary, use adjustable plinth feet. IKEA offers special plinth feet for Metod that allow height adjustment of up to a few centimeters.

A proven approach is to design the baseboards deliberately to cover unevenness—using flexible trims can be helpful, or applying mounting adhesive with small shims to fill gaps.

It’s best to first adjust and level all cabinets so that the top edges are even. Leveling tools, such as a long spirit level or a sturdy straightedge, are very helpful here. Then, secure the cabinets to each other firmly to create a unified structure—this greatly improves stability.

In summary: the key factors are plinth feet and adjustment, followed by connecting the modules and careful planning of the baseboards. If the floor is very sloped, using small wedges or shims under the plinth feet mechanisms can also be helpful.

Hello,

I would like to add that even when working with IKEA Metod, there are a few things to keep in mind if you have uneven floors:

- Before installation, you should carefully measure the floor and check for unevenness using a long spirit level or a straightedge.
- The Metod plinth legs are height-adjustable, but if your floor is very uneven, thin wooden wedges or plastic shims can also help with fine adjustments.
- Make sure all cabinets are connected to each other so they stabilize one another. The connecting elements between the modules are important for this.
- If there are height differences at the fronts, you can compensate well using adjustment strips—these are installed between the cabinet body and the door to improve alignment.
- The baseboards should be installed last so they can visually cover small gaps.

Personally, I was able to compensate for a significant unevenness of almost 2 cm (0.8 inches) over nearly 2 meters (6.5 feet) in my Metod kitchen using a combination of reinforced legs and small homemade wooden wedges. The result was very stable and visually flawless.

Hello GIBIKLA,

To best approach the installation of IKEA Metod cabinets on uneven floors, I would like to provide you with a step-by-step guide that can be adjusted depending on the level of unevenness:

1. Measure & document the floor: Especially with uneven floors, precisely measure the areas where the cabinets will stand using a long spirit level or laser measurement.

2. Prepare the base cabinet feet: The Metod base feet can be adjusted up to 6 cm (2.4 inches). Use these first to compensate for floor differences. It is important that these feet can be securely fixed without wobbling.

3. Use additional shims: If the unevenness goes beyond this or there are localized dips, it is recommended to use thin wooden strips, plastic wedges, or even metal shims. Make sure these materials do not slip and are moisture resistant.

4. Level each module: Check and adjust each cabinet individually with a spirit level. Ideally, the top edges should be aligned in a straight line at the end.

5. Connect the cabinets: Use the supplied connectors such as metal brackets and screws to fix the modules together. This creates a stable unit that compensates for the unevenness.

6. Check the front alignment: IKEA Metod offers the option to adjust doors and fronts horizontally and vertically. This allows for a clean line, even with larger height differences.

7. Adjust the kickboards: Install the kickboards last. To cover larger gaps between floor and kickboard, you can use flexible kickboard profiles or apply sealing strips.

If you like, how uneven is the floor exactly? Then I can give you more precise advice on the best solutions.

My tip: Invest in a good spirit level and allow enough time for adjustments – it will pay off later.

Good luck!

How severe are the unevenness issues exactly?

This is an important question because the approach changes significantly depending on whether there are only minor differences or more pronounced slopes.

I know the feeling of being a bit uncertain before an installation like this, especially when you worry about the stability of the cabinets on an uneven floor. Small misalignments can be very noticeable with large kitchen fronts and may cause frustration.

It also helps to take your time during adjustment with a long spirit level or straightedge, and if necessary, to remove a module and realign it.

In general, I would always recommend investing extra time in precise adjustment rather than living with crooked doors or wobbly cabinets afterwards. It really pays off!
