Hello,
Our electrician is letting us down a bit. The following dimmer was installed:
Merten MEG5131-0000
Can I now safely buy LED bulbs, or is that not possible? I don’t want to spend money for nothing. So far, we have been using halogen bulbs...

Sebastian7930 Jun 2015 09:02It depends on whether you have high voltage or low voltage. I don’t like low voltage, so I use 230V everywhere, meaning no transformers – then you can install dimmable LEDs and everything works well 🙂

You should consider whether halogen might be better for typical short-duration lighting under half an hour, for example. This is the first time I’ve heard that. Why would halogen be better in that case?

That’s the first time I’ve heard that. Why would halogen be better?Halogen light is very close to incandescent light. Incandescent light (RIP) was a brilliant light that faithfully rendered the colors of objects. Halogen is similarly bright and vibrant, but unfortunately, halogen bulbs are not as energy-efficient as LEDs.
LED light appears artificial and is essentially blue. Nowadays, you can buy them tinted, including warm white and warm yellow. However, the light is still tinted and cannot be compared to the light from incandescent or halogen lamps.
Therefore, you should consider whether the expensive LED bulbs are the right choice for the type of lighting you need. Certainly, LED light is effective and economical for stair lighting, accent lighting, and long-duration use. In those cases, the tinted light often works well.
But as the main light in a bathroom, for example, it can look quite different: here you want natural light, and LED is not suitable. Since the main bathroom light isn't on all day, you can and should feel free to choose halogen.
Also, as a daylight substitute, for example when ironing in the evening, crafting, or in the kitchen, LED is not the best choice.
Unfortunately, consumers often get blinded by new technology and forget the qualities of the "old."
LED can be the optimum choice for some areas in or around the house, but it is definitely not suitable for all areas.
Best regards, Yvonne

Sebastian791 Jul 2015 22:42LEDs are not colored but can display the full RGB color spectrum.
As work lighting, they are very suitable when set to a "cool" tone, similar to a fluorescent tube.
Blue is not THE typical LED color; it was simply the white light available in the early days. Nowadays, even in the lower price range, warm white is available that people cannot distinguish from a halogen lamp.

You might be right, and you probably are, @Lexmaul79, but I wonder why you didn’t answer @nathi’s question if you know the answer so well.
Still, @nathi’s question was sufficiently answered—regardless of your correction.
Yes, sorry, my own construction project was completed 2 years ago now… it can happen that some nuances are off, but not the content of the answer itself 😉
Off topic: … @Lexmaul79, the bad habit of no longer answering questions from original posters directly, but only waiting for other users to respond who might then be criticized for their answers, reminds me of that green forum—have you recently adopted that attitude from “those few” over there?
By the way: LED lighting still does not provide the same quality as primary lighting, so I wouldn’t use it as such—even if you can adjust the color temperature to daylight—the light quality remains completely different!
