Hello everyone,

Our notary appointment is set, and I received the measurements of the plot yesterday.

My husband and I each prefer a different house type.

He favors a townhouse-style villa, while I prefer a gable roof with an elevated knee wall.

I’m attaching the measurements and the development plan, and I would appreciate your opinions on which house type would make the most sense, especially regarding the size, so that there is still a nice garden left.

Next Monday and Friday, we have two appointments with general contractors recommended by our circle of friends.

I want to be well prepared for the meetings, so nothing is “pushed” on me, and above all, to approach this process with realistic expectations!

I’m really looking forward to your recommendations!

Thank you

I have to admit, I briefly thought about just running away; it would be the easiest option.

It wouldn’t be. You would come here to check the forum and try to answer a question, but then questions would be asked of you by the attentive readers here. That would be far more uncomfortable.

We also enjoy discussing how to improve unattractive neighbor garage walls, widen parking spaces, train dogs, or block garbage bins to prevent odors.

Exactly! My first thought was: ask him if you can paint the wall, then pick your favorite travel destination or something similar and find someone who is great at spray painting—and just like that, you have your holiday view from the kitchen window.

The neighbors rent there, and the property owner is a wealthy snob… (he owns 3 of the 6 houses in our row)

He put the garage there without ever talking to us first. When I ran into him once, he bragged that the garage cost 40,000 (forty thousand), because it’s so solidly built and extra large…

I don’t even want to contact him at his residence in Mallorca. He would hang up as soon as he hears we want to paint the garage.

I was actually thinking more of a trellis with vines planted in front of it. You could extend it upwards as a sort of canopy, and just like that, it becomes your new favorite spot where the grapes practically hang down from above.

I believe this solution is truly the best option for your situation. The issues with the neighbors… the dog won’t live forever. Unfortunately, when it comes to something like a garage that has received a building permit / planning permission, you just have to accept it. You can also improve the appearance of the wall without your neighbor’s approval, for example by training fruit trees or vines on a trellis attached to your structure. There are some really great possibilities! Consider consulting a professional garden center—they often have excellent ideas.

Regarding the dog… could you raise the fence? How does the dog get to your property?

And elsewhere, you’d have different problems. Difficult neighbors are always tough, but you can encounter them anywhere. Unless you’re willing to live in complete isolation, there will probably always be one issue or another.
