perlenmann22 Mar 2011 13:29Hello,
We are now close to starting construction on the house. Now the question is whether I should have the general contractor, as he suggests, create a foundation along the house wall. For a 9m (30 feet) garage, he wants to install three 30cm (12 inches) diameter foundation piles (which would cost around 1000€).
Wouldn't it be sufficient to have the garage company create a strip foundation instead?

perlenmann22 Mar 2011 14:17I suppose the person I hire will handle that. But I haven’t done it yet. My general contractor is responsible for the structural calculations of the house and assumes so. I’ve heard from another source that a strip foundation is sufficient for a garage.

Yes, a strip footing is sufficient – and as you described it, your general contractor is actually offering you a strip footing; by the way, the price is completely reasonable.
Kind regards

Hello,
just to make sure I understand correctly: Your general contractor plans to create a strip foundation for your garage with a depth of 3cm (1.2 inches) along the house wall? Is the exterior wall of your house also the interior wall of the garage? How deep are the foundations for the exterior walls of the garage supposed to be?
Regards

He wants to install a 30cm (12 inch) pipe running vertically from the bottom of the basement (3 meters (10 feet) deep) up to the top of the basement wall, with three sections over 9 meters (30 feet).
Currently, there is no mention of a strip foundation in his plan. He only wants to properly secure the side facing the house; how the garage will be supported with an additional foundation is not being considered at this point.
I'm asking because I have no experience with this and had assumed that a strip foundation would be sufficient.
Would that possibly be needed in addition?
