Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Kallax shelving unit from Ikea to make my living area tidier and more modern. Unfortunately, I noticed that the unit is noticeably misaligned in some spots – it doesn’t stand perfectly straight but is slightly tilted. After a closer inspection, I realized the cause is probably an uneven wall surface where the unit is placed. The wall itself is not completely flat, which seems to be causing the issue.

My question is: What is the best way to deal with a Kallax shelving unit against an uneven or warped wall? Is it advisable to level the wall first? Or should I try to adjust the furniture flexibly (for example, using wedges or spacers)? Are there any proven tips or professional methods to handle this kind of problem without compromising the appearance or stability?

I’d appreciate any advice or experiences, maybe someone has already faced this exact issue.

Best regards,

Oh, I know that from my own furniture, it can be really annoying! 🙂

What I did back then: If the wall was slightly warped, I just placed small wedges behind the cabinet so it would stand straight again. That works great and is quick to do! Also, the Kallax units are quite sturdy and can tolerate small unevenness.

But if it’s really severe, I would definitely consider smoothing the wall a bit. However, often the wedges or supports are enough to fix the problem!

Don’t stress about it, it will be fine! 🙂

A wall bow can indeed cause problems when assembling or aligning furniture such as a Kallax shelving unit.

First, I would recommend accurately measuring the extent of the wall bow. This can be done using a spirit level or a long straightedge. If the bow exceeds about 5 mm (0.2 inches) over a length of 2 meters (6.6 feet), it may be worth considering measures to straighten the wall.

Alternatively, adjustable feet under the shelving unit or filler materials between the furniture and the wall can help compensate for the unevenness without altering the wall itself. It is important that the stability of the furniture is maintained and that no unintended stresses are applied to the structure.

If it is possible and acceptable to carry out work on the wall to straighten it, such as plastering or applying filler, this is usually the more permanently stable solution. However, this is often not realistic, especially in rental apartments.

My advice: measure first, then depending on the situation, either address the wall or adjust the furniture.

To address the issue of wall warping and the Kallax shelving unit effectively, here is a structured suggestion:

1. Check the wall alignment:
Use a long spirit level or straightedge to take multiple measurements along the wall. This will show you the exact extent and location of the warping.

2. Assess the severity of the warping:
- <5 mm: Minor irregularities, usually not a big problem.
- 5–15 mm: Moderate irregularities, adjustments needed.
- >15 mm: Strong bulges or indentations, wall may need correction.

3. Possible solutions:
a) Decouple the furniture: Insert small wooden shims or spacers to straighten the shelving unit.
b) Retrofit adjustable feet if not already present to compensate for unevenness.
c) Adjust the wall: Depending on the surface (plaster, drywall, concrete), level it again using filler, leveling compound, or drywall construction.

4. Important note:
Directly wedging or tightening furniture against the wall can cause pressure marks or damage over time. It is better to use adjustable feet or flexible spacers.

Summary: Measure precisely, decide based on the extent of warping, and choose a solution that avoids long-term damage to wall or furniture.

If you have any questions, I’m happy to help!

I also find that very helpful – until now, I thought I had to somehow fully straighten the wall. But that’s not realistic in my rental apartment.

Thanks, that’s an important point! I don’t want to damage the furniture. How would you do it specifically? Wooden or rubber wedges?

What materials do you use for wedges?

I’m looking forward to your tips so I can solve this as easily and without damage as possible.

From a technical perspective, wall warping represents a physical discrepancy that inevitably causes misalignment when installing furniture against rigid structures such as a Kallax shelving unit. Fully straightening the wall is often the most technically efficient solution but requires construction work that may not always be practical or cost-effective.

Precise procedure:
1. Measure the wall warp using appropriate tools (spirit level, laser scanner).
2. Document the locations and dimensions of the deformations.
3. Acquire adjustable feet or spacers for the shelving unit. Products made of rubber or plastic also help reduce pressure points and prevent scratches.

Recommendation:
- Avoid using hard wooden wedges, as they can break under load or cause the furniture to warp.
- Rubber buffers or flexible insulating strips are better suited.
- Ensure that the load remains evenly distributed to prevent stability issues.

If the wall itself is unstable in the construction area, additional structural assessments and measures are advisable, but this is secondary when dealing solely with furniture concerns.

Conclusion: Practical furniture adjustments are usually a more pragmatic approach than modifying the wall.
