Hello everyone, I recently purchased a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and want to transport it safely in my station wagon. Since the furniture is not disassembled, I am a bit concerned about the transport, especially regarding scratches, dents, or other damage during the trip.

My question to the community is: How can you best secure a KALLAX shelving unit when transporting it in a station wagon to protect it from damage? What materials or methods do you use to ensure the unit arrives without any marks and remains stable? I would appreciate tips based on experience, including advice on properly attaching tie-down straps, padding, or protective films. Thanks in advance!

This is a really important question, especially with large furniture like the KALLAX, as it’s easy to get worried if you’re not sure how to secure it properly. I had a similar situation myself and can say from experience that padding with blankets or foam is really crucial.

I would also recommend placing the cabinet flat whenever possible to prevent it from tipping over during the drive. In my case, using non-slip mats under the cabinet worked very well to keep it from moving.

Do you already have ratchet straps, or would you like some advice on those as well?

Hey, I really like that you’re putting so much thought into this—a KALLAX deserves good care ;-)

This is what I usually do: first wrap it with furniture fleece or blankets, then tightly secure it with stretch wrap to keep everything from shifting. If you have ratchet straps, place them across the cabinet—but not too tight, or they’ll damage the edges. It’s better to use several soft layers in between.

Oh, and don’t forget to watch out for uneven spots in the trunk! If something is pressing unevenly, even lots of padding won’t help 🙂 Good luck!

Interesting approach here – but I wonder if laying it flat is always the best method. After all, the KALLAX is a fairly sturdy frame.

One could argue that positioning it upright, with appropriate side padding, makes more sense to ensure stability and minimize pressure points.

Do you have evidence for that? Because when the cabinet is lying on its side, screws or joints might be stressed in ways they are only designed to handle when upright.

A combination of methods—transporting it upright, securing it firmly with straps, and providing sufficient soft padding—seems more effective to me. Who has reliable experience with this?

I can add that in such cases, I always use non-slip mats placed underneath the cabinet. This prevents slipping on smooth surfaces (e.g., a plastic floor in the trunk).

Another tip is to protect the straps with padding (e.g., foam or crumpled textiles) at contact points to avoid indentations on the surface.

I would agree with the suggestion to transport the cabinet upright. Make sure to allow enough clearance on the sides so nothing hits the furniture during the drive.

Thanks for the suggestion, that makes sense. I think for most station wagons it’s probably better to position the KALLAX that way, since the sides are often padded (e.g., by the door panel), and this also helps to gauge the distance to other items.

That’s new to me, I’ll give it a try. How thick should these mats be? I’m concerned that too thick padding might make the cabinet unstable.

Also: How do you actually use the ratchet strap? Directly around the cabinet, or around the cabinet plus the cargo bed/seat back?

Thanks again for the helpful tips!
