Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago, I stored my Kallax shelf in the basement since I have enough space there. Unfortunately, I only just noticed that the shelf has water stains – some surfaces are slightly warped, and the marks look like they are from condensation or standing water. My question is: What can I do to save the shelf? Is there a way to treat the water damage without having to dispose of the entire piece of furniture? How should I clean it and possibly re-treat it? Has anyone had similar experiences or tips, especially regarding the stability of the particleboard after moisture exposure? Thanks in advance!

Water marks on KALLAX are usually only cosmetic. Let it dry, then gently sand it with very fine sandpaper. If the area then appears dull, you can treat it with furniture polish.

For context: KALLAX is made of particleboard with a melamine coating. In case of water damage, moisture usually penetrates the cut edges, which can affect stability. Water marks often arise from condensation or standing water on the surface.

First step: Let the shelf dry completely, ideally in a warm, well-ventilated area. After that, the affected areas can be gently sanded with very fine sandpaper (grit 220-320) to minimize surface damage.

However, if the board is severely swollen, it is recommended to replace the damaged shelves, as the load-bearing capacity may otherwise be compromised. After drying and sanding, a specialized furniture care product can help protect the surface and improve its appearance.

Here is a brief guide for treating water stains on KALLAX:

1. Drying: Remove the shelf unit from the basement and let it air dry for several days to prevent mold growth.
2. Sanding: Carefully sand the affected edges with fine sandpaper to reduce water stains.
3. Cleaning: Clean the surface with a damp cloth and mild soap, then immediately wipe dry.
4. Sealing: Use wood or furniture oil only on untreated areas – for melamine-coated surfaces, furniture polish or a special repair pen is more effective.
5. Inspection: Check the shelves for softness – heavily swollen parts should be replaced.

Important: KALLAX is not waterproof, so avoid prolonged exposure to moisture.

That sounds frustrating. I once had a similar problem with water stains on an old KALLAX I had stored in the basement. What helped me was letting it dry slowly in a heated room, followed by very careful sanding. Sometimes you can get really annoyed because you want to keep the furniture so much. 🙂

Don’t be discouraged; often, the piece is still functional despite the stains and can be restored with a bit of patience.

If the edges are thin, usually fine sanding and furniture polish are sufficient. For severely swollen edges, use clamps and wood glue to stabilize them.
