Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago, I stored my Kallax shelf in the basement since I have enough space there. Unfortunately, I only just noticed that the shelf has water stains – some surfaces are slightly warped, and the marks look like they are from condensation or standing water. My question is: What can I do to save the shelf? Is there a way to treat the water damage without having to dispose of the entire piece of furniture? How should I clean it and possibly re-treat it? Has anyone had similar experiences or tips, especially regarding the stability of the particleboard after moisture exposure? Thanks in advance!

It is important to ensure the piece of furniture is completely dry before sanding. Otherwise, the moisture will just spread. It is best to use fine sandpaper and work only on the areas with edges, avoiding rough sanding. Afterwards, apply furniture polish suitable for melamine surfaces.

To ensure stability after exposure to moisture, I recommend checking the structure of the particle board. If it feels soft or swollen, most repair sprays or wood oils will not be very effective. In that case, it is better to replace the damaged shelves.

For superficial stains, cleaning with mild agents and gentle sanding works well. When polishing afterwards, try to use a product suitable for melamine resin-coated surfaces.

One more tip: Avoid high moisture levels in the future, place the shelf on legs or raise the base instead. Air circulation prevents further damage.

Regarding humidity: Most KALLAX issues occur when they are placed directly on damp floors or in humid basements. A simple dehumidifier in the room often helps to prevent the problem in the long term.

Exactly, elevated storage is essential, as is sufficient airflow from all sides.

This can significantly reduce the development of new water damage and should be a standard preventive measure in basements with damp air.
