ᐅ Items sliding inside KALLAX shelf causing clutter – any solutions?

Hello everyone, I have an issue with my IKEA KALLAX shelf, specifically with the inserts for the compartments. These inserts keep slipping down or sideways inside the KALLAX compartments, which causes clutter because the items inside don’t stay neatly in place. This makes it difficult to use and leaves the space disorganized.

I have already tried tightening the inserts and securing them with cloths to prevent slipping, but nothing has held up permanently. Maybe someone here in the forum has a practical solution or helpful tips on how to keep the inserts from shifting inside the KALLAX compartments for good? I would appreciate any suggestions, including homemade fixes or ideas for materials to use. Thanks in advance!

Thanks in advance to everyone for the quick tips! The idea of using felt pads and non-slip mats sounds especially promising. However, one issue remains: when the inserts rest on the back panel of the KALLAX shelving unit or shift sideways, sliding materials often provide only limited help. Does anyone have an idea how to better prevent sideways movement? Maybe mechanical fasteners or a method that requires little effort and is reversible?

To prevent lateral slipping, I recommend small angle profiles made of metal or plastic that can be mounted on the inner sides of the shelving. This creates a guide that securely holds the insert in position. These profiles are inexpensive and available online or at hardware stores; they are discreet and easy to install.

Great idea with the angle profiles! I tried this with my KALLAX and it worked really well 🙂 In addition, you can use foam rubber pads to prevent the inserts from rattling when sliding them in. This makes handling the entire cabinet much more comfortable!

I can fully understand the problem. The constant shifting is really annoying, especially when children are helping or when you need to store things quickly. For me, it is important that the solution remains as flexible as possible, since I reorganize the compartments quite often. That’s why I prefer solutions with non-slip mats and removable profiles. This way, you stay flexible, and the inserts still remain stable.

Hey, I love these kinds of DIY hacks! 🙂 I attached small magnetic strips to my shelf inserts that stick to metal strips on the inside wall of the KALLAX. It holds really well and almost looks like a professional upgrade! If anyone is interested in the details, I’m happy to share more.

That sounds interesting; magnetic strips hadn’t occurred to me. How exactly did you attach them? Did you glue, screw, or use another method? And how strong is the hold? Would this be suitable for inserts with somewhat heavier loads?
