ᐅ Kallax doors do not latch properly – what could be the cause?

Hello everyone,

I recently got an IKEA Kallax shelving unit with doors, but I’m having a problem when installing the doors: they don’t latch properly. As soon as I press lightly or bump them, they pop open again or don’t sit firmly in the hinge mounting.

I have already checked whether the hinges are mounted correctly and if any screws might be loose. The door alignment also seems right, opening and closing is smooth, but the latching just doesn’t work properly.

Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this? Are there known issues with the Kallax door hinge components to watch out for? Maybe an adjustment wheel or a spring is broken?

I would appreciate concrete explanations or practical tips so I can fix this problem. Thanks!

To address the issue more concretely, I’d like to provide you with a structured approach:

1. Inspect the hinge mechanism:
- Remove the doors and hold the hinge in your hand.
- Check if the spring inside the hinge is still tensioned or if it might be broken or slipped out.

2. Check the adjustment:
- Use the small wheel or adjustment screws on the hinges to set the door so that it fits lightly but securely in the frame.

3. Load test:
- Reinstall the door and test whether it stays lightly latched after closing or opens immediately again.

4. If the problem persists, a fine readjustment with a bit more pressure toward latching often helps.

It’s also helpful to lubricate the hinges slightly, as angel already suggested.

In summary: Often it’s a minor mechanical adjustment issue—rarely something that justifies ordering a complete replacement part. Good luck!

Hello pofra,

I understand how frustrating it can be when you have a new shelf and such small but annoying issues arise. That happened to me once as well, and I wasn’t sure at first if I could fix it on my own.

What helped me was to go carefully step by step and check each hinge individually. I also wondered if the door itself might be slightly warped, but it turned out to be just a minor misalignment.

Don’t stress, you’ll definitely manage! If you want, feel free to reach out here again and we can try to find a solution together. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes or new ideas help. 🙂
