Hello everyone,

I recently got an IKEA Kallax shelving unit with doors, but I’m having a problem when installing the doors: they don’t latch properly. As soon as I press lightly or bump them, they pop open again or don’t sit firmly in the hinge mounting.

I have already checked whether the hinges are mounted correctly and if any screws might be loose. The door alignment also seems right, opening and closing is smooth, but the latching just doesn’t work properly.

Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this? Are there known issues with the Kallax door hinge components to watch out for? Maybe an adjustment wheel or a spring is broken?

I would appreciate concrete explanations or practical tips so I can fix this problem. Thanks!

Hey pofra, it’s great that you brought up this topic here! 🙂

First of all: If the Kallax doors don’t latch properly, it’s often due to a few simple adjustment screws or the way the hinges were installed. In my experience with Kallax doors, the spring inside the hinge usually didn’t have enough tension – and that’s why the doors don’t stay securely closed!

My advice: Try tightening the screws that hold the hinge to the cabinet slightly or adjust their position a little. Sometimes the door alignment isn’t perfect, even if it looks fine at first glance.

Keep at it, you’ll definitely get it sorted quickly! If you want, feel free to share exactly what you’ve checked. We’re all curious!

Exactly!

Here is a brief guide on how to systematically approach the problem:

1. Inspect the hinges carefully: IKEA often uses self-closing hinges that include a small spring to hold the door shut. If this spring is missing or damaged, the door will not latch.

2. Adjust the rotation and position of the hinges: IKEA hinges have adjustment screws for height, depth, and lateral position. Incorrect alignment prevents proper closing.

3. Check the attachment to the carcass: Loose screws can stop the door from closing properly because the door is not firmly positioned.

4. If all mechanical aspects are correct, examine the door itself for warping or deformation that might prevent it from closing fully.

In summary: Pay close attention to the springs and adjustment screws and use a small screwdriver for fine-tuning. This way, you can improve the door’s closing function.

Hope this helps!

Hello pofra,

I understand how frustrating it can be when the doors don’t latch properly. I experienced the exact same issue with a Kallax shelf unit, and it was quite bothersome.

Usually, this happens because the small spring in the hinge is slightly displaced or worn out—especially if the doors are frequently moved or have been removed before.

My advice would be:

1. Remove the hinges and take a closer look at the spring—does it feel tight or stiff?
2. Applying some lubricant can help with the latching, but be careful to avoid oily substances; a dry silicone spray is preferable as it won’t gum up the mechanism.
3. Check if the hinge is properly pressed back into the designated groove—sometimes it sits slightly crooked and therefore cannot latch correctly.

If you have any further questions, I’m happy to help. Good luck!

I think that’s a very good approach, however, I also wonder if the Kallax system itself might have a design weakness.

Are the hinges possibly undersized to reliably handle greater forces when closing?

I’m also somewhat concerned about the choice of plastic materials used in the hinge components – over time, they might stretch and prevent the latch from engaging properly.

Has anyone had experience with retrofit hinges or reinforcements that could improve the latching?

Just a thought before spending hours adjusting.

From my experience, I can say that the original Kallax hinges are quite adequate if the installation is done carefully.

In my observation, common issues usually do not stem from material weakness but from:
- improper installation
- incorrect screw placement
- dirt inside the mechanism

Therefore, I strongly recommend following the installation instructions precisely, aligning each hinge accurately, and tightening the screws evenly. Using a small metal scraper to clean the catches in the hinge mechanism can also help.

So, before considering aftermarket modifications, it is important to apply the standard procedure thoroughly.
