A few days ago, I received my KALLAX shelf from IKEA. Unfortunately, the packaging was visibly damaged, and when unpacking, I noticed several cracks and dents in the wood. My question is: What exactly should I claim in a situation like this, and how should I proceed? Should I report the damage immediately to the delivery service or contact IKEA directly? Also, how detailed does the damage description and documentation need to be for a successful claim?

Oh no, that’s really frustrating, but don’t worry! 🙂 With large furniture like KALLAX, this can happen sometimes. The important thing is to take photos immediately, making sure to capture detailed shots of all damages and the packaging. Then notify the shipping company in writing right away, preferably by email, so you have proof!
At the same time, contact IKEA and explain the situation – they are usually very accommodating in cases like this.
It sounds complicated, but it usually gets resolved quickly if you document everything well! You can do it! 🙂

thank you for the detailed response! There are actually several cracks in the cabinet area, and some of the wooden panels are chipped. You could say the stability is compromised, not just a minor blemish. What makes me uncertain is whether it’s really worth insisting on a replacement or if I should be satisfied with a goodwill settlement, assuming IKEA even offers something like that?

I would recommend contacting Ikea immediately in writing with photos, clearly pointing out the defects. If Ikea refuses to cooperate, it often helps to insist on your right of withdrawal or your legal warranty rights.
As TEBILO already mentioned, documenting the damage upon receipt and reporting it as soon as possible is very important.

I once had a damaged cabinet, and they offered me a voucher, which was fine for me. It somewhat depends on the extent of the damage and how well you get along with customer service.
