Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit: Every time I move the furniture or rearrange things, the back panel often comes loose or falls out completely. This is not only annoying but also unattractive because it affects both the stability and appearance. The back panel is normally fixed with small nails, but they don’t seem to hold well enough when the unit is moved.

Does anyone have practical tips or experience on how to better secure the KALLAX back panel so it stays firmly in place even after multiple relocations? Maybe there is a better fastening method or special tools? I don’t want to change the look or functionality, just find a more secure solution.

Thanks for any advice!

Hello,

I would recommend securing the back panel with small screws or furniture tape. Nails are often not sturdy enough when there is movement. Alternatively, a strong double-sided adhesive tape for furniture can help.

In short: You can also attach small metal brackets to the inside edges of the KALLAX wall to secure the back panel. This is usually enough to prevent it from falling out.

This problem probably affects anyone who not only dusts their furniture but actually uses and moves it. But why wouldn’t IKEA use higher-quality fasteners here? To me, it sounds like cost-cutting at the customer's expense.

One idea: The original back panel is often thin and simply nailed on—so why not replace the plain panel with a thinner plywood sheet? You could then secure it properly with screws. I would even recommend that over constantly re-nailing. The only issue seems to be "not changing the appearance," right? That might actually be your problem if you don’t reinforce the back panel somehow.

That sounds frustrating; I know the feeling. My KALLAX shelves often lost their back panels when I wasn’t careful while rearranging.

What I did was use thin self-adhesive hook strips that stick to the inside of the back panel and fit into the side edges of the KALLAX. This way, it holds much more securely without needing to screw the back panel in place. It’s a bit of a DIY fix, but it helps me a lot. 🙂

Sometimes a little extra support really makes a difference—and it also takes away the fear of things shifting.

Hey, this is a great topic! 🙂 I love my KALLAX, but I had exactly the same problem.

I simply attached small strips of wood matching the interior color and clamped the back panel with them. The back panel is now held firmly in place, and everything stays put when moving the furniture!

A little tip: If you rub glue on the nails before attaching the back panel, it holds even better.

Good luck – you’ll manage it! 🙂
