Hello everyone, I’m currently considering how to make IKEA Hemnes furniture—especially dressers and cabinets—childproof. Are there smart tips or proven methods to make the furniture safer for small children who like to climb or open drawers? Ideally, without significantly affecting the appearance, but of course, edge protection should also be taken into account. I’m grateful for any advice offering practical and as simple as possible solutions, for example regarding anchoring, locking drawers, or material protection to prevent finger injuries. Thanks in advance!
And don’t forget: The whole process should be a bit of fun 😉 Climbing is one of children’s favorite activities – so it’s better to be creative when it comes to safety. For example, we use small stoppers on drawers so they can’t be pulled out completely (no risk of falling). For edge protection, you can also try soft-touch colored films, which don’t look like a baby zone at all but like regular furniture. A cool combination of style and safety!
Let me organize this to provide a clear overview for the thread:
1. Wall Mounting:
- Prefer mounting on sturdy wooden parts on the side, not on the thin particleboard back panel
- At least two mounting points to ensure tilt safety
- Choose screws and anchors according to the wall structure
2. Drawer Locks:
- Magnetic or mechanical locks are recommended
- Self-adhesive locks are suitable for easy installation
3. Edge Protection:
- Transparent silicone or foam pads protect against injuries
- Alternatively, soft-touch films for visually unobtrusive protection
4. Other:
- Avoid overloaded drawers, as they can be pulled out more easily
- Install internal drawer stoppers to prevent drawers from falling out
Common mistakes include attaching only to the back panel or using unsuitable screws. Important: After installation, check that the furniture is firmly secured.

If the panel is only fastened through the back wall, there is a risk that screws may loosen because the panel splits or breaks.I completely agree. Additionally, I would recommend reinforcing the back panel before installation by protecting the drill holes with a small piece of wood or edge protection tape. This can help reduce the risk, especially if there is no alternative method of attachment.
Hello! A quick tip from my own experience: check the drawer slides. You can install almost silent locks there that are just as easy to deactivate again. Our kids couldn’t just pull the drawers open, and this without affecting the appearance. It’s fun and protective! Keep it up, you’ve got this!
Thanks to everyone for the detailed and helpful contributions! One of my main concerns is actually the question about the drawer mechanisms and whether IKEA offers suitable safety locks for them. Has anyone had experience with the published IKEA locks specifically for Hemnes? Or is it better to install third-party systems? Are there any tips on how to install such a lock without fully disassembling or damaging the drawers?
