Hello everyone, I’m currently considering how to make IKEA Hemnes furniture—especially dressers and cabinets—childproof. Are there smart tips or proven methods to make the furniture safer for small children who like to climb or open drawers? Ideally, without significantly affecting the appearance, but of course, edge protection should also be taken into account. I’m grateful for any advice offering practical and as simple as possible solutions, for example regarding anchoring, locking drawers, or material protection to prevent finger injuries. Thanks in advance!
Regarding IKEA’s own child locks for Hemnes drawers:
IKEA does offer specific child safety locks, usually magnetic and discreet. They work by being unlocked with a special key. Installation is generally simple and takes place inside the drawer, often without the need for screws, using adhesive strips instead. Advantage: No visible changes on the drawer front. Disadvantage: They may come loose with heavy use or lose effectiveness in humid conditions.
Alternatively, third-party options are often more durable but may require more complex installation with screws. It is important to ensure that the drawer’s mechanism is not affected during installation, as this could make the drawers harder to open or cause damage.
My advice: Try the IKEA lock first and switch to more robust systems if needed. Always make sure to read the instructions carefully to avoid installation errors.

Has anyone had experience with the IKEA locks specifically made for Hemnes? Or is it better to install third-party systems? We have the IKEA magnets installed at home, and I have to say, they’re really quite good. Kids quickly learn that there’s something there, and it looks neat and organized. Checking them three times a week is enough to make sure everything stays in place. No major installation work needed, really easy! 😉
