Hello everyone,
I recently assembled several Hemnes furniture pieces from IKEA in my home and am considering how to make them as child-safe as possible. Since Hemnes furniture is made of solid wood and is quite sturdy but also somewhat angular, I’m concerned about sharp corners, edges, and especially stability to prevent tipping. I’m also wondering how to protect drawers and doors from being opened unintentionally by small children without having to give up using the entire piece of furniture.
Are there any specific tips or products to make Hemnes furniture child-safe? I am particularly interested in practical solutions to prevent pinching, tripping hazards, and potential tipping risks. It would also be helpful to know what safety devices IKEA itself or third-party suppliers offer that are compatible.
I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

the most important thing is to attach furniture brackets or tie-down straps to the wall to prevent tipping.
For drawers and doors, there are child safety locks that can be easily glued or screwed on.
Additionally, foam edge protectors on the furniture corners are helpful.

Regarding making Hemnes furniture childproof, I would like to suggest a brief step-by-step guide:
- Step 1: Check stability. Especially with tall cabinets, make sure they stand securely. If not, be sure to firmly attach them to the wall using the provided wall anchors.
- Step 2: Apply edge protectors. For the often quite sharp wooden edges, there are soft foam or rubber edge guards available that can be stuck on.
- Step 3: Install drawer and door locks. Magnetic or clamp locks from specialty stores work very well here. Make sure they are designed to withstand leverage applied by children.
- Step 4: Maintenance and inspection. All safety devices should be regularly checked to ensure they are still properly in place. Children can be quite creative!
A common mistake is securing only the drawers but not fastening the furniture to the wall. This can have serious consequences. Hemnes is sturdy but can easily tip over with children around.

Hey Husein60, great question!
Sometimes we forget how exciting furniture is for little ones – which makes safety all the more important. 😉
A tip from me: For the corners, I used soft padded edge guards made of silicone. They are flexible, don’t press too hard on the wood, and are also durable.
And what I find really clever are these self-adhesive drawer locks that are almost invisible but prevent little hands from easily opening drawers.
When it comes to tipping over, definitely use those brackets that secure the cabinets to the wall. They provide much more safety than you might expect.

Hello Husein60,
Your concern is really important, especially since Hemnes furniture, with its classic design, is often used in children’s rooms.
Here are some key points I consider crucial:
- Installation: Be sure to use the included wall anchors and follow the instructions carefully. The risk of tipping is often underestimated otherwise.
- Drawer Locks: There are both magnetic and mechanical locks that prevent children from opening drawers or doors. Magnetic options tend to be less visible.
- Edge Protection: Since Hemnes furniture often has fairly sharp edges, I recommend soft edge protectors made of EVA foam or silicone. These are easy to apply and reduce the risk of injuries.
- Additional Tips: Many parents also use small furniture stoppers or anti-slip pads to prevent furniture from sliding.
From my own experience, consistent protection that is regularly checked provides great peace of mind.

I think the whole safety fuss around IKEA furniture is often a bit exaggerated. Of course, you have to be careful with small children – but these Hemnes pieces are built quite solidly.
Sure, that’s true, but is it really necessary to completely tie down every single piece of furniture? It just looks like a prison and ruins the charm of the furniture.
In my opinion, a reasonable check for sharp edges and maybe a few edge protectors is enough. For everything else, parents just need to stay alert. Being overly cautious doesn’t make life any easier.
