Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some IKEA Malm furniture for the children’s room, but I’m unsure how to make it as child-safe as possible. Specifically, I want to know how to prevent the furniture from tipping over and if there are any additional precautions I should take, for example regarding the drawers or edges.

The furniture should, of course, be suitable for children, but at the same time I don’t want to create dangerous tripping hazards or limit the functionality too much.

Do you have any recommendations or experiences with safety measures that have proven effective for Malm furniture? Are there certified products available, or is it better to make custom solutions? I look forward to your advice!

I would clearly recommend always securing the furniture with the included wall anchors. This is the most reliable way to prevent tipping. You can also add drawer locks if the child is very young.

Hello Reopra,

here is a brief overview of how you can make Malm furniture child-safe:

1. Wall anchoring: IKEA provides a suitable wall bracket for Malm, which should definitely be used. For older furniture series, special anti-tip kits can be purchased separately.

2. Drawer locks: Simple clamp or adhesive locks are available to prevent young children from opening drawers on their own.

3. Corner protectors: Soft corner guards made of foam or plastic are recommended for sharp edges to prevent injuries.

4. Floor protection: Rugs or non-slip mats help prevent furniture from sliding, which is especially important when the child is climbing.

5. Weight limits: Do not overload the furniture to maintain stability.

A common mistake is installing the safety devices only partially or skipping wall anchoring – this can be life-threatening.

I hope this helps!

I find this topic really important because I recently experienced firsthand how quickly a piece of furniture can tip over when my son tried to use a drawer as a climbing aid. Fortunately, nothing happened, but it really made me rethink things.

I then secured all the drawers with locks and anchored the furniture to the wall. Since then, I have felt much safer. I can only advise treating these safety measures seriously, even if they seem inconvenient at first.

Hello Reopra,

I understand that you don’t want to rely solely on the built-in safety features of the Malm furniture. The risk of tipping over is especially serious with toddlers. Here are a few tips that always help:

- When attaching the furniture to the wall, make sure the screws are firmly anchored (for example, use wall plugs suitable for the type of wall).
- For drawer locks, clamp-style fasteners work well and remain easy to operate as the child gets older.
- If you use rugs, place them directly under the furniture to prevent slipping.
- Corner protectors are useful for children under 3 years old but can also help prevent injuries in more active older children.

If you have any other questions, I’m happy to help 🙂

Wall mounts are essential. Then add drawer locks. That’s all you need to keep children safe.
