Hello everyone,
I am planning to convert my KALLAX shelf into a minibar but have an issue with the bottle height in the compartments. The standard cubes are about 33cm x 33cm (13 inches x 13 inches), which is not enough for many bottles, especially larger wine or spirits bottles.
Has anyone had experience with adjusting the bottle height? Are there any tricks to modify individual compartments, or perhaps alternative solutions to store taller bottles securely? I also want to avoid compromising the stability of the shelf.
Looking forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello pelufu,
I also converted the KALLAX into a minibar myself. Here are some details that might help you:
1. Bottle height: The 33 cm (13 inches) height is actually sufficient for most standard bottles. For larger bottles (e.g., magnum or special spirits bottles), I removed the middle or lower shelves, as mentioned before.
2. Stability: It is important to keep the back panel firmly mounted; otherwise, the shelf loses a lot of rigidity. If you plan to store many heavy bottles, I would add a plywood back panel of about 6 mm (1/4 inch) thickness, which noticeably improves stability.
3. Alternative approaches: Sometimes it helps to choose slightly smaller bottle sizes when buying or to prefer wine bottles in bocksbeutel shape (about 31–32 cm (12–13 inches)).
4. Appearance and weight: The shelf is basically designed for light to medium-weight items, but with thoughtful reinforcements, it also works well for bottles. I recommend not filling all compartments completely and keeping an eye on the weight.
If you need any more details or have specific questions, feel free to ask!
