Is there a way to equip Ikea Besta cabinets with childproof locks?

I am specifically looking for solutions to reliably secure the doors or drawers of my Besta system against unauthorized opening by toddlers. The locks should not only be functional but ideally also visually match the simple, modern style of Besta and be permanently installed without damaging the furniture.

Are there special child safety locks that work well with Besta, or are universal products more suitable? If anyone has experience with installation or challenges related to mounting hardware, I would appreciate tips on which methods have proven reliable and where to be careful to avoid damage. It would be great if you could also share your thoughts on different types of locks (magnetic, mechanical, clamp locks, etc.).

There are indeed several practical options for Besta that are often recommended by parents. The most important factor is choosing a product designed for flat doors and drawers.

- Mechanical locks, such as rotary or latch locks, are durable and require no batteries, but depending on the model, they can be quite visible.

- Magnetic child safety locks are popular because they can be installed invisibly and have minimal impact on the appearance. There are suitable sets for Besta that are mounted inside the doors and opened with a magnetic key.

- Simple clamp or snap locks are more affordable, but they tend to be less durable over time, especially with frequent use.

Pay attention during installation: for Besta, it is usually necessary to attach the locks to the inside of the cabinet frame rather than the door itself, since the doors often move slightly. Screws should be placed carefully to avoid weakening the wood.

If you like, I can provide specific product recommendations with model names and sources in a later post.

Magnetic locks are ideal for Besta. They are invisible and easy to install. Use those from "Safety 1st" or similar ones available on Amazon. Always cut grooves or screw carefully.

That’s true, magnetic solutions have the major advantage of hardly changing the appearance. At the same time, before drilling, you should check if there is enough stability behind the door for the magnets to hold well. Otherwise, they can become loose quickly.

Suppliers often provide recommendations for suitable wood types and furniture thicknesses.

Another important point is that magnetic systems usually require a special tool (the key), which offers significant protection, especially for very young children. This is different from clips or clamp closures, which can often be opened with more force.

For me, childproofing the Besta was a real challenge because my daughter was very clever and initially managed to unlock almost every lock.

What worked for us was a combination of magnetic locks and a discreet clamping system on the drawers, which provided significantly more resistance.

Sometimes you can feel a bit helpless when the little ones are so resourceful. But it’s worth sticking with it! My advice is to regularly check that everything is still properly fitted and intact. The mechanism can loosen over time if you neglect it.

And don’t worry, the extra investment is worth it in the long run because you won’t have to worry about damaged furniture or dangerous contents inside the cabinets anymore.

Here is a simple step-by-step guide if you want to install magnetic locks on Ikea Besta furniture yourself:

1. Carefully measure the doors and drawers to determine the mounting location for the locks.

2. Make light marking lines inside the cabinet for the lock holders.

3. Carefully drill or screw pilot holes using a suitable drill bit or screwdriver. Since Besta is usually made of particleboard, work slowly to avoid damaging the material.

4. Insert the locks and secure them with the included screws.

5. Test the magnetic pin and lock function before fully tightening everything.

6. Repeat the same process for multiple doors or drawers to ensure a consistent appearance.

Typical mistakes to avoid:
- Drilling too forcefully, especially too close to the edge, which can cause the wood to chip.
- Using screws that are too long, which can damage the back panel.
- Incorrectly positioning the magnets, causing the door not to open properly.

With a bit of patience, the installation goes smoothly. In the end, you get a child-safe Besta that remains easy to operate for adults.
