Hello!

I am currently looking for a wardrobe for my shared flat room (about 15 square meters (160 square feet)). I have found a Pax from Ikea with a width of 1.50 m (5 feet). However, I am unsure about the height. Should I go for one that is 2.01 m (6 feet 7 inches) or 2.36 m (7 feet 9 inches)?

The ceiling height in my room is 2.50 m (8 feet 2 inches), so either should fit without any issues. However, in the store, it seemed very tall and bulky, and I’m a bit worried it might feel overwhelming in my room, which will not only be used as a bedroom.

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

That depends on the location and the overall design of the room. If there is a risk that something might eventually be placed on top of the lower cabinet because space in the room is limited, it is better to choose the taller cabinet from the start.

We also have Pax, and we chose it deliberately when we moved into an older building with high ceilings (but unfortunately small rooms). We specifically went for the taller version to be able to store more in the wardrobe. Since then, we have moved twice, and I have to say that the wardrobe has never felt overwhelming to me. I completely understand your concerns. As my predecessor already mentioned, you should consider the overall design of the room. What do your desk, bed, shelves, etc. look like? What color will the new Pax wardrobe be? Are the walls painted, and if so, are they light or dark colors?

So, to summarize briefly: if you have a lot of stuff, go for the 2.36m (7 ft 9 in) version; otherwise, let it depend on the overall furnishing of the room.

P.S.: If you choose the 2.01m (6 ft 7 in) version, you can still put things in boxes or cartons on top of the wardrobe, but that is difficult to reach and will mostly just collect dust in the room.

Best regards!

About two years ago, we chose the 2-meter (6.6 feet) version because the 2.36-meter (7.7 feet) one wouldn’t have fit due to the sloping ceilings. At the time, we were a bit frustrated because we would have preferred the taller option.

Now we’re glad we went with the smaller size since the ceilings here are under 2.40 meters (7.9 feet) high, partly sloped, and using sliding doors would have been tricky, if it would have even worked at all.

We would choose the 2-meter (6.6 feet) version again. Although you lose some storage space, it’s more flexible. If needed, you can always put things on top of the wardrobe.

First of all, thank you for your responses!

I have now decided on the 2m (6.6 ft) option since I don’t really need to store that many items and it probably fits better into the overall room.
By the way, it’s a birch frame with 2 Fardal doors and a mirrored door.

Bought it yesterday, now we’re getting started with the assembly.

Best regards,
Tim
