Hello everyone, I am currently planning to assemble the Ikea Brimnes bed and wonder how much and which tools I really need for it. I don’t want to buy unnecessary tools, but I also want to avoid unpleasant surprises because of missing equipment. Is there anyone here who has already assembled the Brimnes and can tell me if a simple screwdriver is enough, or if I should also have a cordless drill, Allen keys, hammer, or other tools ready? I am especially interested to know if basic household tools are sufficient or if special tools are required that Ikea does not include with the delivery. Thanks in advance!

The question of the right tools for assembling the Ikea Brimnes is definitely justified, as many either underestimate the time required or the preparation involved. Basically, the Brimnes is designed so that Ikea includes all the necessary small tools (e.g., Allen keys). However, I recommend having a good Phillips screwdriver on hand, as some screws or dowels are easier to handle with a solid screwdriver than with the small Allen key.

I would also suggest using a cordless drill, but only one with torque control to avoid over-tightening or damaging the panels. It is important to be very precise during assembly to ensure all parts are perfectly aligned, so having a small hammer or rubber mallet can also be helpful (for the dowel connections).

My recommendation:
- Allen key (usually included with Brimnes)
- Phillips screwdriver (#2)
- Cordless drill with torque control
- Rubber mallet

If you want to work precisely, you might also want to have a small spirit level ready to align the frames correctly, for example. How about you—do you already have a standard tool set at home? What exactly are you planning, will you be assembling it alone?

Thanks in advance for the initial assessment! Yes, I have a basic toolset at home that includes a few screwdrivers and a hammer, but no cordless drill. The assembly will be done alone, so I thought a cordless drill might make the process much easier. How critical is the torque limitation for this piece of furniture? Is it possible to manage without a cordless drill? And what about the Allen key—are the ones from Ikea generally usable, or would it be better to get your own?

Hello Jakob! I assembled the Brimnes myself last year – without any professional-grade tools. A simple Phillips screwdriver and the Allen key provided by Ikea were enough for me. Of course, a small cordless drill speeds things up, but it’s not really necessary.

Regarding the Allen key: Ikea’s isn’t a precision tool, but it’s more than sufficient for the included screws, so there’s no need to buy an extra set.

Just be careful not to overtighten the screws, but that applies to almost every piece of furniture like this. So, no worries! With a bit of patience and some basic DIY skills, you can easily assemble the bed on your own.

If you want, I can also share a few practical tips to make the assembly process more relaxed.

In practical terms, assembling the Brimnes bed requires only a Phillips screwdriver (#2) and the included Allen wrench. Most fasteners are designed to be installed with these tools.

I agree with the recommendation to use a cordless drill with torque control, although it is not absolutely necessary. Without a cordless drill, assembly takes more physical effort and time but is still manageable.

A hammer or rubber mallet is occasionally useful for inserting wooden dowels. A spirit level is optional but usually unnecessary, as Ikea furniture is designed for precise fitting, so a visual check is generally sufficient.

In summary:
- Essential: Phillips screwdriver, Ikea Allen wrench
- Optional: Cordless drill (with torque control), hammer
- Not needed: Spirit level

If working alone, a sturdy work surface and enough space to spread out all parts is also recommended.

Thank you for the clear and well-structured information! It’s very helpful, especially the prioritization of tools into “essential” and “optional.” If I understand correctly, if I already have a cordless drill (or can borrow one), it’s better to use it, but it’s still possible to assemble the bed without one.

One thing I’m still wondering about: How stable is the construction if, for example, only a Phillips screwdriver is used? Are there risks of screws being tightened too loosely or too tightly? What happens if you over-tighten screws with the small Ikea allen key? I would really appreciate hearing about your experiences.
