ᐅ How much tooling do I actually need to assemble the Ikea Brimnes?

Hello everyone, I am currently planning to assemble the Ikea Brimnes bed and wonder how much and which tools I really need for it. I don’t want to buy unnecessary tools, but I also want to avoid unpleasant surprises because of missing equipment. Is there anyone here who has already assembled the Brimnes and can tell me if a simple screwdriver is enough, or if I should also have a cordless drill, Allen keys, hammer, or other tools ready? I am especially interested to know if basic household tools are sufficient or if special tools are required that Ikea does not include with the delivery. Thanks in advance!

I only had the included tools as well. A Phillips screwdriver and some patience were completely sufficient. I didn’t need a rubber mallet; everything fit together easily.

Great, thank you very much for the many detailed and clear answers and recommendations! I think I’ll try it with the included Allen key and my Phillips screwdriver. I’ll pass on using a cordless drill this time, since I don’t have one and can’t borrow one.

However, I will get a rubber mallet as that sounds reasonable for the laminate floor and wooden dowels.

Does anyone maybe have additional tips for the assembly process that might not be obvious at first? For example, small tools, tricks for alignment, or organizational advice?

Here are some practical tips for the assembly:

- Sort parts in advance: Lay out all screws and components according to the instructions to avoid long searches during the process.
- Use a blanket or soft mat as a base to protect parts and the laminate flooring.
- Screw connections lightly at first, then assemble all parts before tightening them fully.
- Keep a small cup or bowl handy for small parts to prevent them from getting lost.
- Follow the instructions carefully and check each step thoroughly.

This may sound obvious, but it is often underestimated. Planning and organization make a big difference!

Good luck with the assembly!

Yes, I recommend finding a helper for the critical steps—this is especially important when aligning the side panels of large furniture pieces like the Brimnes. If that’s not possible, use sturdy objects (e.g., stacked books or small stools) to temporarily support the parts.

Also, keep tape (narrow painter’s tape) handy. It can protect delicate edges during assembly or temporarily hold screws in place if you’re working with only one hand.

When inserting dowels, I suggest cleaning the holes briefly with a suitable tool (e.g., a thin wooden dowel) to help the joints fit more easily.

Feel free to contact me anytime if you have questions—I’m happy to help.
