Hello everyone,
I am considering buying a Pax wardrobe system from IKEA, specifically the drawers with the locking mechanism. My main question is: how long does the locking mechanism of these Pax drawers typically last with normal use?
I am interested in whether this mechanism is durable over the long term or if it often experiences defects, wear, or reduced functionality, especially in households with heavy use. If anyone has been using these drawers for a longer period, a review of your experience would be very helpful.
Additionally, I would like to know if there are any known weak points, if and how the locking mechanism can be maintained, and which factors can significantly affect its lifespan.
Thanks in advance for your input!

From a technical perspective, the load capacity of the locking mechanism falls within the medium stress range typical for furniture fittings. The construction, made of plastic and metal springs, offers a typical service life of about 7 to 10 years under normal conditions.
Regular cleaning and avoiding overloading are crucial factors for optimizing the lifespan. Ambient temperature and humidity also play a role, as plastic components may fatigue faster under extreme conditions.

At the first signs of sticking or binding, a little silicone spray can help, but it's better to use a maintenance spray that leaves no residue.I completely agree! I once had excellent results with a PTFE spray on another repair spot of a piece of furniture. Drawers then glide very smoothly, and the locking mechanism is not negatively affected 😉
I think it’s important to also discuss the service aspect. If the locking mechanism stops working properly, it’s frustrating when spare parts are not available or when Ibiza (sorry, IKEA!) doesn’t provide support.
Perhaps someone here has experience with how IKEA responds to repair requests? Especially for more expensive furniture like Pax, this could be a good criterion for or against purchasing.

It can be stated that the locking mechanism of Pax drawers is designed for normal household use.
Empirical data indicate a functional service life of approximately 7 years, with failure rates increasing after this period.
- Regular cleaning extends the lifespan
- Overloading should be avoided
- Spare parts are available, but availability may vary depending on the model generation
This corresponds to common standards in furniture hardware. For commercial use, the service life may be correspondingly shorter.
