Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to buy a Pax wardrobe from Ikea and want to prepare well in advance. My main question for those with experience is: How long does it usually take to assemble an Ikea Pax wardrobe?

I am interested in details such as the approximate time for a standard-size model, for example about 100 cm (40 inches) wide, 236 cm (93 inches) high, and a typical depth of 60 cm (24 inches). It would also be helpful to know whether assembling alone or with two people is definitely faster, and which factors influence the time required (for example, installing sliding doors, shelves, small parts, etc.).

I would appreciate estimates based on personal experience, ideally including tips on what to watch out for to save time or avoid mistakes during assembly.

Thanks in advance!

From my experience, assembling a standard Pax wardrobe measuring about 100 cm (40 inches) wide and 236 cm (93 inches) high usually takes around 3 to 5 hours when two people work together. If assembling alone, it generally takes between 5 and 7 hours, depending on your level of DIY skill.

It’s important to note that sliding doors can significantly increase assembly time. Installing the doors including the sliding rails is quite complex and typically adds about 1 to 2 hours. This also includes proper adjustment of the doors.

The following factors influence the overall time:
- Number and type of doors (sliding vs. hinged)
- Number of shelves and interior components
- Experience of the person(s) assembling
- Availability of appropriate tools

My advice: Unpack and sort all parts before starting, and carefully follow the instructions step by step. Try to avoid interruptions to reduce time lost from having to reorient yourself.

I can confirm this and would like to add:

The assembly of the Pax wardrobe is divided into several phases:

- Frame assembly: Make sure all the connectors fit correctly. It is advisable to assemble the frame without the doors initially to ensure stability.

- Interior fittings: Shelves, clothes rails, drawers – the more of these there are, the longer it takes.

- Door installation: Sliding doors require special attention because the sliding rails must be aligned precisely; otherwise, the doors may stick or not slide smoothly. I recommend leveling the sliding rails with a spirit level.

- Adjustment and fine-tuning: After complete assembly, be sure to check if the doors and drawers close properly and make adjustments if necessary.

Additionally, the floor condition plays a role since uneven floors can make alignment more difficult, requiring re-measurement and adjustment.

My recommendation: For a standard-sized wardrobe, plan at least half a day with two people. If assembling alone, allow for a full day and include sufficient breaks to avoid mistakes.

As planned, the exact installation location (for example, floor quality, available tools) is crucial for the time factor. What specific dimensions or features do you have in mind?

Good question! The wardrobe is intended to complement my bedroom with dimensions of 100 cm (40 inches) width, 60 cm (24 inches) depth, and the standard height of 236 cm (93 inches). I haven't finalized the door style yet but am leaning toward classic hinged doors, as I feel more confident avoiding mistakes with those.

The floor is fairly level laminate, and I have all the usual tools on hand, like a cordless drill, spirit level, and screwdrivers.

So basically, the plan is a simple standard assembly with multiple shelves and clothes rails, no drawers.

If I understand correctly, two people with experience should take around 3 to 4 hours?

I'm curious whether that estimate fits reality or if it's too optimistic.

Exactly, that’s a realistic estimate for the assembly you described. I’d like to organize this a bit more and provide some practical tips to make the process as smooth as possible:

- Preparation: Unpack and sort all parts. Check for any damage.
- Have tools ready; using a cordless drill with the correct bit significantly speeds up assembly.
- Create a workspace, preferably on the floor with a soft surface (blanket or carpet) to prevent scratches.
- Divide tasks: While one person builds the main frame, the other can sort or prepare interior parts.
- Install doors last to avoid rush from dealing with their weight and adjustment.

Common mistakes:
- Screws not inserted at right angles (leads to poor stability)
- Not using all fastening points (makes the cabinet unstable)
- Installing sliding doors too early

Summary: For a 100cm (39 inch) wide, 236cm (93 inch) high Pax wardrobe with hinged doors, multiple shelves, and clothing rods, 3 to 4 hours for two people should be sufficient. Plan a bit more time if breaks are needed or it’s your first time assembling a Pax.

Good luck with your build!
