Hello everyone, I am planning to build my first Ikea Metod kitchen myself and am currently focusing on the question: How long does a self-assembled Ikea Metod kitchen typically last, especially when installed in an average household with normal use? I am interested not only in the general lifespan of the units but also in aspects such as the durability of the fittings, the stability of the cabinets, and the quality of the fronts with long-term use over many years. Are there any experiences on how long one can expect a self-assembled Metod kitchen to last before major repairs or even replacement become necessary? Feedback on any potential weak points or tips for extending durability are also welcome. Thanks in advance for your insights!

The durability of a self-assembled Ikea Metod kitchen largely depends on several factors: quality of installation, daily use, and environmental conditions. Generally, Metod kitchen units are designed to remain functional for about 15 to 20 years when properly installed and used under normal conditions.

- The carcasses are made of particleboard, which is susceptible to moisture damage over time.
- Fittings (hinges, drawer slides) in more affordable models may wear out after about 10 to 15 years but are usually replaceable.
- Front panels are generally sturdy but can show scratches or chips with heavy use.

Accurate installation is essential: inaccuracies can reduce stability and shorten the lifespan. Regular maintenance, avoiding moisture, and preventing stress from frequent disassembly or exposure to extreme heat are also important.

I fully agree with this. Additionally, I would like to point out that the lifespan can be extended through regular maintenance. This means tightening screws, cleaning the tracks, and lubricating them if necessary.

The way the kitchen is used also matters: in households with multiple people or professional kitchen use, wear parts may deteriorate faster compared to single-person households, where usage is significantly lower.

Finally, many parts in Metod are modular and replaceable, which makes the kitchen overall more durable than you might initially think. However, it is important to use only original components to maintain proper functionality.

Ikea Metod easily lasts 10-15 years if properly assembled. More than 20 years is rare but possible with replacement of worn parts. Definitely avoid wiping the fronts with too much water.

I built a Metod kitchen myself 8 years ago, and it still feels very solid. Sure, the handles and hinges didn’t feel quite as fresh after a few years, but a few replacement parts here and there easily fixed that.

The most important thing: avoid excessive moisture and adjust them regularly. For me, the countertops have become the weak point over time, but the fronts have held up surprisingly well.

If you’re specifically looking for sustainability, you can easily upgrade or modify the kitchen instead of replacing everything—which I personally see as a real advantage 😊.
