Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some dark-finished IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces, and I want to care for them as best as possible to maintain their high-quality appearance over time. I’m especially unsure about how to properly clean dark-stained or lacquered surfaces without damaging the finish or leaving unsightly smudges.

I’m particularly interested in the best cleaning products, care techniques, and tips for preventing common issues like scratches, fingerprints, or dull spots.

Perhaps someone here has experience with Hemnes furniture in dark finishes or similar pieces that require regular maintenance.

How do you approach caring for these types of furniture, especially with dark finishes? I look forward to your practical advice!

Hello Leventenar,

your question is very well phrased and shows that you are thinking carefully about proper maintenance. For dark lacquered IKEA Hemnes furniture, I strongly recommend avoiding aggressive cleaners, as they can damage the finish and cause dull spots in the worst case.

I usually use a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth. It is important to first remove dust roughly from the furniture piece and then wipe gently without applying strong pressure.

For care, it’s advisable to occasionally use a mild soapy solution (a few drops of dish soap in water) to gently remove grease stains or fingerprints. Wiping again immediately with a dry cloth never hurts, to prevent water marks.

Scratches are best avoided by proper handling, but if small scratches do appear, you can touch them up with some furniture polish or special lacquer markers, which are usually available in matching colors.

In general: less is more when it comes to care—frequent gentle cleaning is often enough to keep the surface in good condition.

I hope these tips help you!

Hello everyone,

I would like to take a more structured approach to this topic, as I personally own several Hemnes furniture pieces with this type of finish.

First, you should know that dark finishes are more sensitive to dirt, dust, and especially greasy residues – these are simply more noticeable on dark surfaces.

The following care routine has proven effective:

- Removing dust: Wipe daily or several times a week with a dry, clean microfiber cloth using gentle pressure. Avoid coarse or abrasive fabrics.

- Damp cleaning: For heavier dirt, use a mild soap solution (dish soap in warm water). Wipe gently along the wood grain, if visible, with a damp cloth.

- Drying: Never leave the surface wet; immediately wipe dry with a clean, dry cloth.

- Polish and protection: Avoid waxes or oil-based polishes because IKEA furniture is often sealed with a polyurethane finish, which can be damaged by excessive use of care products.

- Treating scratches: Small scratches can sometimes be concealed with furniture touch-up markers (for dark wood/finish) or by very fine sandpaper followed by careful repainting. Be very cautious to avoid causing further damage.

- Environmental factors: Avoid direct sunlight, as the dark lacquered surface can fade.

One more tip: If you notice the surface becoming dull, it is usually due to too much cleaning agent or insufficient drying afterward. Minimal moisture and no harsh cleaners are therefore essential.

If you or anyone else has questions about any of these steps, I’m happy to provide further advice.

Interesting approach, but honestly: is that really up to date? Especially with modern paints and sealants, we should consider whether simple cleaning with a dry cloth is sufficient and what unnecessary moisture and chemicals might cause in the long run.

I agree with that, but I also see the problem that many furniture owners, fearing scratches and dull spots, prefer not to do anything – and over time, the furniture suffers rather than benefits. My suggestion would be: accept that signs of use are present, and instead invest in professional-grade furniture care products designed specifically for polyurethane finishes.

Regarding fingerprints: are they really that much of an issue, or is it just a changed perception when it comes to dark surfaces?

In conclusion: my thesis is that overly cautious care can sometimes do more harm than good – a bit of confidence in the right product and targeted use of professional care are often the better choice, in my opinion.
