Hello everyone, I am planning to install an IKEA Besta combination as storage in one of my bathrooms. Since wet rooms usually pose a challenge for furniture made of wood-based materials, I want to specifically address the topic: "How to best secure IKEA BESTA in wet rooms?"

I am looking for tips on how to protect the modules from moisture without causing immediate damage or swelling. Should they be additionally treated with waterproofing, are there special seals, or is protection more about the method of installation? Are there any experiences with particular paints or coatings to sustainably extend the lifespan of this furniture in a wet room environment?

I am also interested in advice on the proper way to fix them to walls exposed to higher humidity, as well as possible recommendations regarding the distance from the floor – a terrace would be an additional plus. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Hello Bosin, your topic is very important because BESTA standard furniture is primarily designed for dry indoor areas. Basically:

- Always install furniture against an airtight wall, preferably with no direct water sources nearby
- Before installation, treat all wooden edges and joints with water-repellent varnish or a thin clear coat
- There are special moisture-resistant silicones for sealing between furniture and wall
- Leave at least 5 cm (2 inches) clearance above the floor to avoid splash water
- If possible, line the underside and back panels with moisture-resistant boards (e.g., HPL or plastic)

This provides a solid foundation to keep your BESTA furniture durable. Additionally, you should regularly check the furniture for moisture if the bathroom is not continuously ventilated.

Feel free to ask if you need more details!

That is very good advice. I would like to add that it is also important to treat the screw connections with corrosion protection to prevent rust.

It is also recommended to keep the indoor air humidity consistently below around 60% using a dehumidifier or an efficient ventilation system. No matter how well you protect the furniture, if the ambient humidity remains high for a long time, the material will deteriorate faster.

Unevenness on the wall can be evened out with a moisture-resistant substructure made of aluminum profiles, onto which the BESTA system is then mounted.

To ensure the durability of IKEA BESTA in wet rooms, the following measures are particularly recommended and supported by studies on the moisture resistance of wood-based materials:

- Use of moisture-resistant sealing materials, such as mold-resistant silicone
- Sealing all wooden edges with multiple coats of water-repellent lacquer (at least 3 layers)
- Installation of additional spacers to prevent direct contact with wet tiles or wet surfaces
- Selection of corrosion-resistant metal screws (stainless steel or galvanized) to avoid rust and moisture damage
- Regular ventilation of the room through windows or ventilation systems

The combination of preventive surface treatment and structural measures provides the most effective protection for the BESTA system.

Clear tip: Always keep moisture away from furniture.

Do not place furniture directly on tiled floors; maintain a distance of at least 5-10 cm (2-4 inches).

Seal edges with paint, and use sealant to waterproof walls and floors.

Usually, that's all it takes.

Thanks, that’s something I hadn’t considered yet. Should special screws for damp areas be used here, or is a coating with anti-rust paint sufficient?

Which varnish would you recommend for the edges? Is there a difference between solvent-based and water-based sealants?

Also, I’m curious whether it’s better to completely seal the back side of the BESTA modules, or if airflow ventilation for the furniture should be maintained?
